i don't mind if giroux skips the olympics completely

A lot of hate for the Olympics.

Maybe its an American thing (no offense intended), but its actually a pretty exciting thing for most countries, and their hockey elite.

Sure its different, but its the best of the best, and provides some great hockey to watch.

I hope Giroux goes, and it helps him grow into a more complete player.

I would have to say Frank Bathe in 82 and Miroslav "Cookie" Dvorak in 84 could certainly challenge Barnes.

For those fans who think the Flyers D isn't that good day today, trust me, they are way ahead of where they were by the end of the 81-82 season. Frank Bathe played only 28 games, was a +11 and was named their best Dman. Injuries had claimed Jimmy Watson and Bob Dailey while Behn Wilson continued to struggle defensively. Brad Marsh was terrible for most of that season as well. When you start having to play such standouts as Bob Hoffmeyer and Fred Arthur, you know the D is in trouble!

i like watching olympic hockey

but giroux is proving to be injury prone and the flyers are my first priority

I agree that Dvorak was good, I just, like you, was surprised that he beat out Howe that year.

I enjoy Olympic hockey as well. That being said the risk of a star player being injured less than 2 months before the playoffs is simply not worth the risk.

I would rather go back to amateurs for the Olympics and restart the Canada Cup/World Cup series. It seems to make a lot more sense to hold these type of tournaments in August/September. Players that get injured would then have a month or so to heal before the start of the season and more seriously injured players would have 6 months to heal for the playoffs.

After last season, I think players will see the compressed schedule as mere child's play.

He has missed 5 NHL games in 4 seasons. And he played in 42 NHL games plus 33 games for the Phantoms his first season.

I love Olympic hockey.

But I want key players for the Flyers like Giroux and Timmo to skip the Olympics. So much travel and wear and tear.

It's up to the players in the end. If it is important to the players to participate, I understand this and wouldn't stand in their way. It is a great honor to play for your country. But as a fan I want what is best for the Flyers team first.

Met Barnes at the Whalers reunion in the summer of 2010, along with ex-Flyers Andre Lacroix, Kevin Dineen, Howe, and a few others. Barnes was super nice, along with everyone else there and esp had some excellent memories of the Flyers, as My friend Danny and I were the only one there with Flyers colors on.

I hate that the NHL season gets interrupted for the Olympics. And I don't root for the US or Canada or Russia. I root for whichever team has the most Flyers on it.

I enjoy the high level of hockey being played during the Olympic tourney, but I really do not get as passionate about the gold medal game as I do a random Flyers game played in the middle of January.

If a guy like Giroux or Timonen was lost to the Flyers from an Olympic injury, I'd be absolutely (frank)ing livid.
