From the past blog about "learning" from Giroux:

And before anyone says how good Giroux is when he signed that deal it was after his 3rd year with a stat line of 25- 51 -76. Stepan, coming off his 3rd year if you stretch it over 82 games: 31 - 44 - 75. Soooo except for being drafted in the first round and being a tad older at the time of the deal it is the same situation. Flyers got a bridge deal @ $3.75M and now have to pay him $8M... Lets invest here a little bit. Lock him up, and if he does what Giroux did in making a leap we now have the best value player in the NHL. Lock. Him. Up.

EDIT: I see you agree Jan

Really don't like this signing...mainly because I am a devils fan. He is a great defender and you got him at a great price.

Jan, if you are on the money (pun intended) with your estimate for Stepan, then Sather truly received a hometown discount on Step and McD.

Like I said before, best offseason signing by any team so far.

Honestly this is the best way to start back a work week after a vacation weekend.

Very good deal.

Atleast Gomez was worth it for us.

I'm telling you, amid all the talk of how to improve the team this is the way to do it. Keep your own house in good order and then support the core. If we get a good value Stepan and Hags deal alogn with a reasonable Hank extension all this summer, coupled with a coaching hire that has us excited I don't know how you can't view this as a positive offseason (aside from the Richards thing)

Rangers would have plenty of cap space if they bought out Richards.

A blue line that would have consisted of Tinordi, Gorges, Subban and Mcdonagh would have been one of the deepest and well banced group of defensmen in the league

Nothing they can do about it now. Gotta lock up Stepan, Hagelin and Falk and call it an off season.

Great signing by the Rangers, would have loved to see him fall through the cracks and hit the market! You have to love listening to the idiots, mainly Glenn Healy on HNC Radio who was on again earlier today after killing the Isles for signing Hamonic to a great 7yr deal now killing the Rangers and that's after talking about what a great deal the Clarkson signing was! What world do these guys live in?

Agreed. Looking at the roster again, ignoring rookies we have exactly 12 forwards. My hope is out of Lindberg, Miller, and Fast 2 crack the lineup sending Moore and Pyatt to the press box to be the 2 extras for a full Roster. Hopefully those 3 deals give us room to fit all of that.

The more I look at it though, the more I'd rather dump Pyatt somehow to save his $1.5M and get another player that can jump in and play 4th line that is more at that 1M price tag. seems like penny pinching but he isn't worth that price and I want flexibility.

That is a great deal right now, and will be a crazy good deal in two years. Slats really deserves alot of credit for getting his RFAs signed for really good values. I agree he should try to get Stepan tied up for as long as he can, probably around the 4.5 per year mark, and maybe he can even try to shave a couple Ks of the annual cap hit. Also, I think that if the Rangers bought out Richards, Stepan would have had crazy leverage, so you can argue that The Rangers may save a little of Stepan's cap hit by keeping Richards.

The deal is going to look great by year three. Think he thrives under the new system too.

Healy is a Leafs corporate clown; towing the company line. The Isles and Rangers both did well bringing their respective top shutdown defenseman in long term, at a fair market price.

Yes I made this point too. Richards also limited our cap space so you can use the "I am trying to keep this group together" argument against them. We shall see. But yes, I think if you got Step at 6 years $4.5 per it is a steal. if he pans out as we hope its a steal and if hes our #2C I am fine paying my #2C 4.5M. So no matter how you slice it, it is a good deal. Lets hope and pray...

We should still be okay to sign all the remaining RFA's. 6.5M is the capspace when we don't include Asham and Powe going to the AHL. We should have about 1M more when that happens. If Stepan can accept a deal for 4.5M and Zucc reportedly would accept an offer around 1.35M, Hags could be signed for around 1.5-1.75M on a bridge deal. Unfortunately, it looks like we will be trading away someone. Hopefully its Pyatt and not Boyle. What doesn't factor in is, Miller and McIltrath if either are gonna start with the Rangers. We'll probably be over for the summer cap and have to trim before the season starts.
