Any chance you might be willing to move Eberle? I realize Tyutin alone wouldn't make that work. What would you be willing to move? Is your first in play for a guy like Tyutin in a package deal? Perhaps The #7 and a player for Tyutin and the Kings or Rangers pick, whichever comes later. |

I doubt eberle moves, he's one of their best guys. For tyutin it might be more along the lines of Paajarvi or Gagner (plus other pieces from both sides) depending on who they draft this summer |

I agree, I doubt they move Eberle but i had to ask.
I'd be more interested in moving up in round one and ditching Tyutin's cap hit. D is the deepest part of the organization and I doubt Columbus will be a cap ceiling spender so reallocating some of the payroll to add some more skill wouldn't be a bad thing.
We'll see I guess. I know Kekalainen is prepared and has a plan in place for any and all contingencies. |

I could definitely see that, though I'm not sure I want to see that since the Sabres are drafting 8th |

I've used it here before (yes, a long time ago) and I use it for other sites too. It's served me well. |

I only remember it with the old Stars blogger, but I have never been a big fan of advance statistics for sports just over complicated things in my opinion. |

Thanks for the blog.
So basically a player whose GVT is positive is better than an 'average' player while those with a negative GVT are not better than an average player. This is ground breaking stuff!!
Very complex calculations to arrive at a conclusion that most fans instinctively deduct from simply watching the game.
Advanced stats work in baseball, the only team sport where essentially only two people are moving at any one time...but hockey is a team game and advanced stats are largely nonsensical in relation to team sports. If people enjoy them, fine, but they have not caught-on for a reason. |

And yet several teams admittedly employ people whose sole purpose is statistical analysis. Calgary, Tampa, LA and other clubs have people on staff that do just that. You just don't hear about it.
It isn't about determining if a player is above average (the term was actually threshold, which means replacement level and not average); it's about trying to figure out how far above average he is. Can you determine how much more valuable Sidney Crosby is than Pavel Datsyuk? It's trying to answer things like that.
I don't know if you read the whole post or not but I did say it was harder to apply advanced stats to hockey for the very reason you mention. Yet to say they are largely nonsensical isn't fair IMO. |

I did read the entire post and agree it is harder for the very reason I mention. It will remain nonsensical to me until someone can effectively explain the utility in determining how much better Crosby is than Datsyuk.
It's a relative measure to the average so either I'm not understanding completely - given my 2 minutes in looking at the math - or you're off (not an insult).
Would these stats ever replace actual scouting? Would these stats speak to competitiveness? Interpersonal skills? The point is that these stats are fine for what they are and may shed some light on a players relative ability but there are so many other variables, including team play, that could impact his personal stats. |
