if they could all stay healthy, that's a pretty good top 6 - if they play to their capabilities. will be interesting to see if coburn and/or meszaros move on, and what holmger does to replace them.

fwiw, i liked what i saw from huskins.

I'm not opposed to trading Coburn or Meszaros, assuming the value coming back is equal to or greater what we're shipping out (cap hit and talent both being considered). Seeing as trading Meszaros now would be selling low, I'd prefer him to stay and see if he can play without his shoulder disintegrating.

Seems to me the organization has always been a big fan of Coburn...

I do think the Flyers can get some value for Meszaros...a team can take a chance on him, because when he is healthy, he is an effective player...

Who knows..maybe we can trade him to Calgary for one of their late first round picks

I'd trade him in a deal (with more going to Cgy) for Johnny Gaudreau, if they could pry him away. Reminds me of Matt Read, but younger.

I think Bill makes a fair assessment of the D situation.
Here is hoping that the injury situation is better next year.

Because of the long break, no one will be under pressure to return before they are able.

I think Bill did a great job in his work this year encouraging active debate.

Excellent assessment, most of the Philly media could learn a lot from you!

It seems to me that all the Flyers really need is to find a mobile, offensive defenseman to pair with Schenn and they would be in pretty good shape.

Obviously, this isn't as simple as it sounds, as these guys are not easily acquired. Bill, do you think St. Louis, in light of having to re-sign Pietrangelo and a multitude of RFA's, would be willing to deal Bouwmeester. And if so, what would it most likely cost? I think he would be a perfect guy to pair with Schenn on the top shutdown pairing.

I think St. Louis, with plenty of cap space and a new ownership group, would like to retain all three.

I'm not a huge Bouwmeester fan at his cap hit. He is a player who can either put up a lot of points (as he did in Florida) but be spotty on defense or be decent defensively and sacrifice 3/4 of his offensive game over a full season.

Great post.

The 33-year-old Walker's odious contract, which the Flyers absorbed when compelled for cap reasons to trade Simon Gagne to Tampa Bay in the summer of 2010, finally expires this summer. He got paid an actual salary of $2 million this season (injured players had to be paid during the lockout) and grossed $5.5 million in his three years in the Flyers organization after Tampa foisted his long-term contract on Philly.

I'm sure Matt Walker is a perfectly nice person in real life.

But $5.5 million dollars for what he contributed to the organization? I hope he collected his check with a ski mask, because he stole that money. His agent is a genius.

Yes they could.

I'd suggest a 101-level course first for most of them though. Gotta get the foundation set before trying to write with the big boys.

Nice write up Bill. I agree. Thanks for putting some clamps on the Lauridson speculation. I feel like He's done a great job but is still a far cry from taking over for Coburn or anyone we currently have on the blueline.
I feel that Gus has the edge on the 6th spot at the moment and it's really his to lose come camp this year. I feel that he has outplayed Gervais, especially in his second call-up stint.
If Homer does get a replacement for Kimmo, like a Yandle or Carlson or someone (not debating who) I think either Coburn or Meszaros will go back as part of that deal or be moved in a separate one. I think Homer is in the position of telling both those guys "I need a puck moving defensemen, you're it until you're dead, or I find someone better". The problem is how to get someone better without giving up too much of the farm.

Before I even read the blog, I must say I loved watching the Blues-Kings game yesterday. Playoff hockey is awesome. The Blues played a terrific game last night. I thought they totally outplayed the Kings for most of the game.

The Flyers have never had a player with the name "Seth" in their history.

The Phillies, on the other hand, have had one "Seth" in their history.

Seth Morehead pitched for the Phils from 1957 - 1959.

You're welcome.

I think its fair to say Matt Walker can now be referred to as Matt ((frank)ing) Walker.

OT playoff hockey is even better. Last night further reinforced my belief that the shootout is just horrible.

I think Lauridsen has played himself into the picture, and will at least get a look in camp. And if he continues to progress, I could certainly see him as an NHL defenseman. But this talk that he can replace Coburn or Meszaros now is ridiculous.

Yep, Lauri has an upside, crunching serious minutes with a ton of responsibility isn't it yet. He needs to take lessons from Rinaldo on when not to take those dumb penalities. When his third cross check hit Ott and Ott hit the floor like a 2 year old in a tantrum I was miffed at Lauri. The refs let him get away with 2 cross checks, then a vet taunts him into a third. The refs are taking that idiot off the ice! And I couldn't blame them even with the embelishment.
I do think he has the size, and the snarl. He just needs to work on his positioning and his discipline.

A bit yeah. I didn't get to see a lot of the games last night but what I did see proved to me why we aren't there. No way could we have hung with the Hawks last night...
And I think Quick needs a hug. Banging your head on the ice after a play is never a good sign.
