Great analysis
Seems the Hawks have followed the blue print of Detroit and the Habs both teams connected with Scotty Bowman
Draft and develop and bring on the young guns on when they are ready
A formula for continued depth and success

GREAT READ JJ, AS ALWAYS

There is no doubt that the Maestro...Bowman Sr. has brought the full weight of his hockey expertise to improve the structure and vision of the entire hockey operation.

The org has executed its vision of locking up a core nucleus of outstanding young stars and everything has flowed from that. Kudos to all of them including McDonough who i have a lot of respect for.

Outstanding post as usual JJ! While many of us armchair GMs have called for players to be traded away (Kane, Crawford, and Hammer were the three most common this past summer), cooler heads seem to have prevailed and the Hawks are reaping the benefits. I would hate to think what this season would look like without Scotty Bowman in the management's ear.

Great job as is the par JJ, thanks!

It's just a shame the Hawks didn't acquire Ott at the TDL...

...now they have no chance. How can such a soft team compete?

Mayers I think helps too. The guy may not have anything left in the tank but in terms of being a good influence with the younger players and trying to help out on stuff like faceoffs after practice seems to be a positive influence.

Not a star player by any stretch of the imagination but definitely a professional and I think players like that are important as well.

It has been nice to have the Hawks relevant again especially on day one (well first broadcasted game at least in YEARS) when this happened

Talk about a consummate professional! Mayers not only still works hard in practice even though the chances of him playing in any more games is slim, he is also cheerful with the media and was first to welcome a young cancer survivor who was on the ice during a Hawk practice. I hope that the Hawk coaching staff are able to get him in a few games during the playoffs so that if they go all the way his name is on that cup as a crowning achievement to a classy carreer.

Not quite. The Western Conference Champions will be crowned after the Western Conference Finals. Regular season means zip.

Regular season standings dont matter as long as you get in the tournament.

I bet the Canucks and their fans were also pleased the last 3 seasons. AND they are also Presidents cup trophy winners which made their fan base ecstatic!

I truly hope I am wrong and that additional grit to allow the Hawks to play any type of game isn’t necessary, but if they do lose I promise not to gloat and say ‘I told you so’.

I do have that 2010 feeling though....it should be VERY TOUGH for any team to take 4 of 7 from us.

Agree with Ogi here...that first round loss to the No Stars after winning the President's hardware was brutal. We've seen two first round exits the last two years.

The second season awaits.

That comes only after 12 playoff wins.

RS success or mediocrity means squat. Just ask LA.

BINGO.

RS is all find and dandy. But that's it. Zero rings are handed out after 82 games (in this season's case, 48 games).

Great article.....I much prefer these type of reads to the rumor's that never come to light.

I remember that 1991 playoff series against the North Stars so well. I still don't like Shane Churla!!

Hey JJ- Haven't posted in forever, but I still read every day. This was a nice article and I'm glad to see you take such a big picture approach in evaluating the organization, despite some of its apparent dysfunctions. While the past two first round exits and the relative lack of aggressive roster changes may have been frustrating at the time, as you stated, this team now seems very well positioned to be a contender for the next 5-7 years, with a decent cap situation and many very solid young prospects waiting in the wings. It also seems like the GM and the Head Coach have been able to put together a roster with the type of leadership and dedication that championship teams require, continuing to build on the "culture of winning" you describe. Every year won't be like this one, but I'm looking forward to many seasons of very entertaining hockey going forward, and hopefully a couple more championships!

Hey, John McDonough told me personally yesterday that the playoffs were all that mattered and that this team really needs to play strong in May and June.

Typical company lne from a marketing man, but it was still nice to hear.

Almost made me forget about his ridiculous comercials about taking the Stanley Cup back home.
