Kevin Freiheit: Who is more valuable: Vanek or Miller? Miller is 32 years old, so it's likely that he has a few more years left in the tank, but as he approaches 40, his value will go down simply because of age. Vanek is 29 years old and a 4 time 30-goal scorer. Who is more valuable?

Speaking as a pure objective hockey fan:
Miller is one of the premier goaltenders in the league. Many older players have struggled in this condensed season. Don't under value his services. At 32 he has another 5 years of dominance in him between the pipes. Where would NJD be if they unloaded Brodeur at 32? Build around Miller. You can't go wrong.

Now speaking as a leaf fan:
Miller sucks! Dump him for a back of hockey pucks. Tandem Hacket and Enroth.
Ignore how badly the leafs have struggled for 10 years with sub par goaltending.
Trust me, It wont happen to you.

doesn't sound stupid at all. i think his point is that a 40-goal scorer is more valuable than a goalie who picks up a few shutouts.

I would keep Miller just for the fact that you won't have to deal with annoying canuck fans offering you luongo for half your prospect pool and draft picks all season long

I realize that he's scored 40 twice before, but IMO realistically he's a 30-35 goal guy if you look at his career shooting %'s and SOG's per season. Same with a guy like Rick Nash, everyone seems to refer to him as a 40 goal scorer when in reality he's a 30-35 goal scorer.

Either way, I do agree that Vanek is more valuable than Miller.

Luongo, Ballard for Hodgson, Myers and a 1st.

Hodgson would make a good 4LC, Myers could be decent as a 6-7 guy and Luongo guarantees the Sabres will make the playoffs for the next 8 years at least.

Vanek is a 30 goal / 60-70 point guy, he's been banged up for what seems like forever, but he does produce. Goalies seem more interchagable to me.

With a good Defensive group, Miller plays well. When 100% and has a decent center Vanek is unstoppable.

Miller, and its not even close.

Miller is a top goalie in this league, and Vanek is like a 4th tier star. One dimensional player with a lot of talent but that depends completely on the players around him. He'll play 1/3 to 1/2 of a season depending on how in shape he is, how motivated he is, or how injured he is.

Vanek, despite being paid like a top 10 player has never been a top 10 player in this league. He hasnt scored 40 goals in 5 seasons, and has never been a point per game player since his career high SEVEN years ago (he has been this season, although thats in jeopardy).

Ryan Miller has been in the bottom half of the league's goalies in terms of save percentage for three straight years now. It's pointless to argue the fact that the defense in front of him sucks because the same argument could be made for Vanek and the talent level around him. If the question is about who is more valuable to the team it probably is Miller just based on the number of games he's stolen but in a trade there's no doubt that Vanek would get you much more in return than Miller would.

Even strength save percentage, Ryan Miller is at the top of the league, and has been, for about 6-7 years. Each year his total save percentage fluctuates depending on how good the Sabres are on the PK and PP. Ryan Miller won the Vezina when his team had a good PK and was middle of the road in every other stat category.

You cant use that argument with Vanek, because he put up 40 goals playing with Roy. If he did it twice, why was he not able to do it again? Vanek has had players around him, hes just not motivated enough to be a top tier star in the league.

I've yet to see Vanek solely responsible for winning a playoff game for this team, Miller... he's done it a few times.

If a goalie is on the move the leafs will be on speed dial, what's the asking price for miller going to be?

Well Ben Bishop went for a really good young player so I'd say something like:

1st+good prospect+roster player (mainly to even out the cap hit).
