Salvador for E.Staal its a fair trade because they are both captains you guys might habe to add a little extra though since Salvador is captain of a team higher up in the standings

The big move on defense won't come for another year or so when the Canes do a repeat of the Jordan Staal draft day move for Marc. Something like a 1st and Ryan Murphy I assume.

I like Bellemore, I think he'll develop nicely. A big strong guy that's not afraid to mix it up either. Not sure if the Canes will make any moves. They had some bad luck, but they'll bounce back.

Jamie McBain on the trading block, per Darren Dreger.

Smid re-signed today for a whopping 4 years / $14 million, so if the Canes try to add depth defense that is 1 fewer possibility.

Sounds like JR has both McBain and Jussi on the block.

Do you think the Canes could afford to deal both for picks right now without damaging the current roster too heavily?

For 4 of his best years, I thought 3.5 per was pretty reasonable. I'd slot him in at 5-6, he could slide up to 2nd pairing if need be.
*edit* Realistically, he is 2nd pairing atm anyways... Which could stick if the Oilers D doesn't improve.

I'm torn on Jokinen. As someone who watches every Canes game, it's easy to see why Rutherford is looking to unload him. He isn't crazy expensive, but $3M is a decent chunk of change that could net a more suited 3rd line leader and even save a few $ or could be coupled with another $1-2M to add an impact player either at forward or on defense. But the good version of Jokinen that is incredibly versatile (wing or center, scoring line or defensive line, PK or PP, faceoff help, etc.) is cheap at $3M. Regardless, I really think Rutherford misplayed the situation. I think Jokinen's value would have risen if he waited. Only 1 of the 4-5 teams chasing Iginla got him. A few of the other non-rental forwards (Ryan, St. Louis) will prove to be either not available at all or 2 expensive. And there just really isn't much available in terms of rental top 6 capable forwards. I think Jokinen could have been worth a decent return when Cup-capable teams started more desperately trying to keep up with the Penguins tomorrow afternoon and realizing that there weren't many options. But now any Jokinen discussion starts from the point of "that guy you tried to give away for free last week." Hardly seems like that garners anything more than someone else trying to dump someone not working out or a very low token draft pick.

Maybe I'm just too much of an optimist, but I would keep Jokinen for now. His return is about nothing anyway, and he has the potential to help a playoff push.

I think the ship may have finally sailed on McBain. We keep waiting for the offensive upside which has never really materialized. And he is borderline top 4 at best really more like a good 3rd pairing guy on a good day. And in the past couple weeks he has had few good days and about 2-3 absolutely horrible ones. At this point, the only positives are the elusive upside/potential tag and his reasonable sub-$2M price. If tomorrow was a playoff game and you had to plug Bellemore or McBain into the last D spot who would you go with? That says a lot about Jamie McBain's future in North Carolina.

Well said on Jussi, Matt. Have to think if JR just sat tight for a few days, he could have marketed Jokinen as a strong plan B to desperate teams that miss out on Clowe, Iginla, etc.

The timing of the Jokinen waiver move was curious in that it happened within 24 hours of the Semin contract extension. It was almost like JR had orders from upper management to unload salary ASAP, and failing to strike a quick deal for Jokinen, he just tried to ship him and his $3mil out via waivers.

Is $3.5M really a fair price for a 3rd pairing defenseman?

Is there any basis to the rumour of Luongo for Eric Staal? Sounds like an April Fool's joke; which means the originator of this rumour is a dunce because April Fool's technically ends at noon.

Because we want to trade our captain and leading scorer to get into the same "one too many expensive starting goalie" problem that Vancouver currently has with Luongo and Cam Ward?

well with this loss the Canes wont be acquiring anything. It is best for us to be sellers. Sad and very disappointing season. Eventually the team will have a solid D and a team that wants to play physical. It may take a couple of seasons in this new conference getting the snot whipped out of the team.

Then again maybe im being too much like Chicken Little

It's a pleasure to watch a game with John and Tripp at the mic.

Thats what they should have done. Canes are being very poorly run...
