better than the usual blog.

Although I don't think Klefbom-Schultz would work as a pairing. Too much young blood. Wait until Klefbom cracks the lineup before you say he'll be top4 right away

I gotta say - Schultz and Petry are great skaters and have good vision, but if they were solid puck-movers, we'd be able to move the puck solidly. We are currently lacking in moving the puck in a BIG way. Whether you want to address the issue (after all, Petry and Schultz are both likely to become more confident, better honed versions of themselves in the coming years) is another debate. In fact, you may be silly to add another puck mover at this juncture. But I don't think anyone should be particularly satisfied with what they bring now.

As far as the "So and So costs too much to be a 5/6 dman" argument, that's only an issue if you don't have cap space to do what you want. No one's saying that if Smid doesn't fit into our improved top 4 a couple years down the road, that he won't fit into somebody else's. The time to worry about someone potentially being overpayed when we have a particularly good Dcore is not now, while we have a bad one.

At what point do you stop thinking a couple years down the road and start thinking now

Sens won't deal their 1st round pick and Bishop for a upcoming UFA depth d-man. Further, the Sens aren't in dire need of a Smid type of d-man. We are doing just fine keeping pucks out of the net despite all our injuries. We need help generating legit offence. I'd like them to go after a Whitney type of guy to be honest.

You start thinking now in terms of locking up the talent you currently have, and adding players you know you'll need.

You keep thinking a couple years down the road in terms of trying to upgrade guys like Justin Schultz and Petry. They're good enough because they're young, but they certainly can't do it alone.

Remember that Cloutier suggested a conditional 1st based on Smid re-signing. Which means if Smid walks, it's just Bishop. Still a considerable price, but let's not get it twisted.

Whitney would of course be cheaper, but with 7 points in the last 10 playing top 4 minutes, it's actually creeping up!

Add Klefbom to the Top 4. He's good enough to do it.

- Maxbone

If Klefbom is good enough to be a top 4 d-man, why isn't he already there?

Exactly why I mentioned him. He has been playing well of late. The Sens have held on to this Bishop trade piece for sometime now, I doubt they would trade him away for a rental. Murray just doesn't trade away 1st round picks. His strength is the draft, so keeping his picks is important, unless you are getting a big time player of course.

1. he's hurt, or atleast he was, not sure if he still is

2. he had already committed to playing the full season in the SEL

I think he had a contract in Europe that he had to play out. Someone can correct that if I'm wrong though.

But that's what I'm saying, if he did in fact end up giving up a 1st round pick, it wouldn't be for a rental!

Bishop for a few months of Smid may not be something you're interested in, however. I wasn't aware his value skyrocketed from the mid 2nd he was acquired for.

If the Oilers wanted him he'd be here.
