I think you say it best EE when you say that it doesn't matter what system is being played; it matters that the players playing want to play it and are following it.

And as a coach, try to find one that belongs to the players you have in your lineup. That is my knock on Jacques Martin.

Every team will abandon the system that got them there and sit back to try and hold a lead at some point during a game. The problem under JM was that the players were sitting back even when they were losing

Honestly, I've missed the entire 3 game win-streak. During the 3 game losing streak, there was alot of this going on but Emelin wouldn't check behind him before doing it which would result in a cross-ice one-timer... I like that he tries to do it, but he's gotta figure out when it's smart to go. Here's hoping the coaching staff takes care of this!
