Reckless player who has history of sending players to the hospital and/or ending their careers (Marc Savard). Shanahan has no balls...none. Embarassment. |

That's your emotions speaking. It sucks but it being on purpose seriously???? Battling for a puck coming into the boards on one leg so that he can find the small area to severe his achilles. LOL |

The more I see the play, the more I think he didn't do it on purpose. He isn't looking at Karlson. As much as I want to say why was his foot in the air, I also realize that weird things happen all the time.
It really sucks for Karlson, and hockey fans in general. So let's hope he recovers fully and comes back even better. |

Looked like a hockey play to me. If it was a less infamous player, most people would agree. |

Matt Cooke can blame the fact that he should have been kicked out of the NHL permanently years ago for the reason that there is a discussion. |

Actually it would be quite easy when you accurately describe what happened. The Achilles was just a bonus.
It looked absolutely like intent to me.

As soon as you lob out, "the guy should sit for as long as the other guy is injured" you're going to have some team milk a guy's injury just to keep an opponent out of the lineup - especially late in the season or in the playoffs. Even if you invoke it in this instance, the Senators lost their top player; the Pens would lose a replaceable 3rd/4th line guy. Imagine if it was Malkin taking out a guy like Andre Benoit or Kaspars Daugavins; who really gets the worst of that swap?
That's not to say the play shouldn't have received further scrutiny (it probably should have), but the notion of suspending Cooke for the rest of the season because Karlsson is out the rest of the season is a dangerous precedent, and would almost certainly open up a can of worms that I don't think fans really want to deal with. |

Is he seriously asking if a clean hit that results in injury should be a suspension?
What a joke.

Boohoo, it was a clean hit that resuled in an injury...you punish those and you are going to have no hitting in the NHL. |

Reality check ... while he has a history; last night's deal wasn't an intentional thing; it wasn't deliberate - it was more unfortunate. Some of Cooke's worst critics two years ago have spoken out saying there was no intent and he shouldn't be blamed. You suspend him over that, you may as well close down the NHL for good. If this would have been done by Pascal Dupuis in the same fashion - no outcry whatsoever, but since its a guy that has a history, its deliberate? The fact it happens to one of the best players in the league is the reason for the uproar by the usual suspects on this board.
This certainly isn't a suspendible offense and to those who do think that way, you need to learn the game and get a hockey IQ. Blame the officials from last night for not blowing the puck dead. If that does happen, this freak accident doesn't happen. It's pretty simple. |

I'm sorry guys but that was quite obviously unintentional he looked like he was going to try to pin Eric against the boards during the fight for the puck. Its a tough blow for sure but honestly Neil has to make him self look like a complete idiot after? Have some dignity Neil with or without your teeth. |

I can't see how that would be intentional. To catch a player, in the quarter inch of space between the back of the skate and the leg, get your blade in there, while tussling their way into the corner, with his head faced the other way, is near impossible. It would take someone years of training to get to that level of precision. And if he were going to spend years of training trying to get to that level of precision, he could have trained on being a goal scorer. He'd be scoring 70 or 80 goals a year. |

Where did I say it was on purpose? Cooke has a history of these kinds of hits (intentional or not)... |

Same with Flyer, Ranger and Boston fans as well since we already know which side they are on.

Sitting for as long as someone is out most definitely isn't the answer. However I agree with some it should be one of many factors considered to add more time. I wouldn't mind seeing suspensions for the balance of a given season.
This one however doesn't seem to me to be intentional. Just my humble opinion. |
