I would really like this to happen to Shane Doan.

It couldn't have been any more obvious that regardless of the bad blood between the two teams Quenneville and Tippet have a world of respect for eachother. Quenneville rolling the third and fourth lines during the power plays late in the game was indicative of that.

Wonderful win. Rumor has it that Bollig has a bum hand and that's why Mayers was out there the last couple of games. I think Carcillo replaces both when he returns. But that's for another time.

Gotta love what the third line is doing. Stalberg on the right has been a god send. And I think Saad drew his 6th and 7th penalty this road trip just by continuing to skate.

So many good things happening.

20 out of 22. Unreal.

JJ, I read somewhere Bollig may be having an issue with his had after his fight in the Calgary game, have you heard anything?

John, I was wondering the same thing about why not Bollig instead of Mayers -- as Bollig could/would have likely destroyed Torres. But then I got to thinking, Mayers is a consummate pro and very well liked and respected in the Hawks dressing room. I think part of what and why has to do with that -- wouldn't be surprised if Jamal stepped up (whether quietly to Q) or to the team and said he'd take on Torres. Got to really respect the guy for that -- and yes, he landed 2 really solid hits on Raffi that drew some blood.

On another note, it's pretty clear to me that Hjalmarsson is really holding up the 4/27 duo as several times Oduya made some really stupid decisions with the puck but Nik bailed him out every time. Wish 2 & 7 would get their act together -- too much hesitation on what to do with the puck and still hate the doubling back crap of Keith. And I thought Roszival was supposed to be back -- don't like Brookbank all that much and feel Leddy plays better with Roszival in the lineup.

Has anyone heard whether Leddy is OK after taking a puck off his face last night?

Sure hope so -- that guy is very good on the PP and like his composure in our end with the puck and pressure. He's doing a better job of hanging on and skating himself out of trouble instead of simply poking at the puck. I also like the fact that he's now a PLUS for the year.

I was going to say the same thing, Bollig might be injured due to his bout in Calgary. Regardless you knew whoever suited up out of Mayers/Bollig was going to take Torres to task. Glad it got done early and the Hawks were able to house those bums.

Nice summary, JJ. I've been lurking for awhile and just registered today. I've admired your ability to not be married to your beliefs and opinions. I've seen that you're willing to come off your positions when you believe the facts dictate. This is a cool trait. Your comments on Shaw are an example of this; he seems the type of guy that goes full out into any challenge and the results are starting to show at center and at the dot.

An enforcer doesn't deter, he metes out punishment. Remember Bollig's presence on the ice didn't deter Torres from hitting Hossa last spring.

The only thing that can deter a player from injuring another player is the coach, who would need to be deterred by the GM, who would need to be deterred by the owner, who would need to be deterred by the league threatening to fine the team millions of dollars for players trying to injure each other. And in that situation, the coach would stop dressing players who have no respect for other players, and that includes Carcillo.

Seeing as the above isn't going to happen any time soon we will continue to see players try to injure other players regardless of the presence of an enforcer, be it on the ice or on the bench. And then we’ll see the enforcer ‘settle’ the score at the next convenient time.

Great blog JJ

Shaw is also impressing me especially as a 5th round pick
The 3rd line is fast and they have the chemistry and skill to make plays through the neutral zone and around the net

Sharp had his best game and as bad as he has been he has eleven points

Glad Suter passed up on the Hawks offer last June

He is looking average and over paid in those God awful Jerseys in Minnesota

$200 million wow .......ouch

I think your right Tippett and Q made a deal and that was a good idea

Yeah Bollig's hand is bandaged up pretty good from one of those uppercuts to Jackman.

Largely agree. But I think two other things can deter teams from running our stars. One is a kick-ass power play that will cost the offending team the game/series. Coaches will not allow this crap if they believe it costs them games. The second is a belief by that coach that the punishment by the Hawks will be directed on his own teams' best player. I'm not talking about dirty crap, just Bollig hammering their guys whenever possible. Other teams will trade Torres for Hossa, but won't as quickly trade Doan for Hossa.

Great summary JJ, the Hawks really did set the tone early in the game which was HUGE! An absolutely amazing first period of hockey.

Kudos to Mayers for stepping up and giving the Hawks the momentum after the skirmish with Torres.

We are approaching the first quarter of the season, and have amassed lots of points.

We have seen alert fighting for pucks on almost every play and it isn't easy to work that hard 60 minutes, it is commitment.

We have seen rebound-stingy goaltending paired with full team defense and it along with the work to get pucks has made a constant driving transition game.

We can try and pick apart various pieces but essentially there are lot's of things to like.

IMO, "little" Andrew Shaw is everything you want in a hockey player…and more.

It has to be that Brandon Saad's groin issues were pretty severe, because it is pretty clear he is powerful skater with gears and a solid force in collisions that we didn't see last time around.

And to see Tazer turn Oliver Ekman Larsson inside out was, well, a thing of beauty.

I am tickled at they way these players have come to play.

It is like teams they are about to play were expecting a wave and don't know what hit them when it feels like a full blown Tsumami…

Let's talk more about getting better players … if we want to frustrate ourselves until the March dealing...

There's nothing that says that Bollig won't go w/Torres when they play next. I think I read after the game, Mayers was asked if it was finished with Torres and his response was...'We'll see'.

Hey JJ,

What do you think about this option? Everyone is aware that the Washington Capitals are drowning with cement shoes on.

Here is my train of thought. Ribiero has probably been their best player. They gave up a 2nd and Eakin to get him. I dont imagine they just planned to rent him for a year, especially a bad year, when he has played very well. I expect they try to sign him. They could be set with Ribiero and Backstrom down the middle.

Outside of that WAS should be in full blown housecleaning mode soon. This team is just not right, and hasnt been for years.

I believe because of all this, Marcus Johannsen can be had for a 1st round pick this year. he is a rfa and at only 900k, we dont need to ship any current roster players out. I think this would add enormous depth and gives us a 2C option in case bolland hits a lull again

Legitimate question with no ill intent.

Outside of Buffalo and Chicago, do any other fanbases spend this much time talking about largely irrelevant, scratched 4th liners?

There's a lot of talk of revenge on Torres and whether or not fighting a guy can be a deterrent, but I think Mayers coming out and fighting the guy on his first shift back in the NHL really does make a statement. Even if it wasn't the beating most Hawk fans would hope for, it sends the message that "we can't stop you from doing what you do, but if you even think about doing it against us, this will continue." If a player knows that everybody is keeping a close eye on him, he's less likely to do something that's going to get him punched in the face, whether the coach encourages him or not.

They love Johannsen. I have a buddy that works for the Caps and he said they've got a list of young players they don't want to move...Johannsen, Carlson, Alzner, Orlov, Holtby.

Not saying you couldn't pry him away, but they see tremendous upside in him.

Ironically, we still talk about a 4th liner that now plays for Buffalo. Chew on that for a moment...

Torres - a leopard doesn't change its spots. Eventually he will go on another one of his seek and destroy missions. His reputation precedes him - a cheap shot artist who attempts to injure players he locates in a vulnerable position. Not much to distinguish him from Matt Cooke.

And that's the reason he has had short stays in Columbus, Buffalo, Edmonton, Vancouver and now Phoenix.

Well the fighting and rivalries of the past couple decades are really not like in the original six era.

I remember a United Center game where Hawks Probert fought Domi and they were out that night TOGETHER getting cocktails.

A lot different than when both teams would play back to back games in both cities and ride the train after game one to the other town...and players wouldn't go to the dining car, because they would have to walk through the train car where the oppositions sleeping berths where...they didn't want to see them, talk to them, because they were the enemy!
