It's also evident why Kris Russell should be sitting. For some reason coaches have these pet players. For Quenville it is inexplicably Jamal Mayers. Like any team needs a guy who shoots the puck twenty feet wide 9 times out of ten? |

BTW, there's now 348 players who've scored an NHL goal this season - none of which are named Phil Kessel. |

Speaking of, there's the smaller Kris Russell getting worked off the puck by the larger Dan Cleary, then cheating up and leaving Cleary all alone for a shot and a free rebound. But hey, Russell can skate really fast and occasionally makes a nice pass on offense!
Cleary becomes the 350th NHL'er to score a goal this season. Phil Kessel ... is still looking for #1.

After doing a pretty good job of dictating play for the first 4 minutes, the Blues have really looked like crap since the Cleary goal. |

We may have to start keeping count of how many passes David Perron makes in a game, just to see if it hits double digits. Based on what I've seen out of him tonight, I'm tempted to put the over/under at 4.5 or so. |

Yeah, and it didn't help that Jackman had a hold of Tootoo's stick at the time. Way too much playing back on the heels right now.
Kindl is the 351st NHL'er to score a goal this year. (Yes, this is going to be a theme for a while.)

did the blues play last night? look like they have zero energy
wings have a rookie in net in his first NHL game, they should be creating more pressure and going to the net. |

Best shift of the game there from McDonald-Steen-Stewart. Backes takes a debatable penalty, which gives the Red Wings a prime chance to put a strangehold on this game and kick start their PP (which the Blues PK has been willing to let other teams do this season). |

1st period scoring
1. DETROIT, Dan Cleary 1 (Tomas Tatar, Justin Abdelkader), 5:14.
2. DETROIT, Jakub Kindl 1 (Cory Emmerton, Drew Miller), 11:50.
Shots on goal: St. Louis 9, Detroit 12.
Want to rub some more salt in the wound? That's the first point of the season for all 6 of those Red Wings. If either Tatar or Nyquist had never scored an NHL goal, at the rate this is going I'd put money on one of them to do it in this game.
Surprisingly, Stewart had a good period. The PK was much better than it has been at times (though that's a low bar to clear). Steen was OK, Backes-Oshie did some stuff but nothing really noteworthy, Perron skated elegantly in circles with the puck without doing much, Jackman got more interested in Tootoo than playing defense, and guys generally struggled to slow down the Detroit passing game.
In other words, if you ignore all the things the Blues didn't do well (which means ignoring about 10-13 minutes of the period), they had a pretty good 1st period. |

Yeah, which is why I had to qualify with "if they hadn't scored a goal in the NHL already." The way the Blues have been playing lately, they'd still find a way to allow a goal to Nyquist.
BTW, we're now up to 353 NHL'ers who've scored a goal before Phil Kessel. The latest: Chad LaRose, Carolina - who beat Craig Anderson (OTT) at 12:59 of the 2nd. |

because Kessel is a perimeter player, mix that with a little bit of bad luck and there ya go. |

The free Center Ice preview ended on January 31, and since then the Blues are 0-2-0 and have been outscored 13-4. Coincidence? Hmm ...
Jackman out with Pietrangelo to start the 2nd; Russell paired with Shattenkirk. One of those pairings screams "play offense and abuse me like a red-headed stepchild." |

Zach Redmond with his 1st of the season (and his career), making him the 354th player to score a goal this season.
Schwartz-Tarasenko-Berglund with a strong shift. I kind of like that line. |

If Brunner has a little more patience on that, he probably fakes Elliott out of position and has a chance to bury it into an empty net. |

I wanted to take the PP - especially since I thought Tarasenko just fell down on the incredibly crappy ice ... but then Backes takes a stupid penalty to negate it and give the Red Wings lots of room to operate 4-on-4. |
