Very interested in your take on Redden or other potential depth defensemen being signed. As soon as I saw that Redden would be bought out immediately I thought he would be a potential fit as the Bruins' 7th d-man, assuming he was willing to take that role. I have long believed that since the 7th d-man spot is usually occupied by a player with fringe-level NHL talent, it is better to find someone who has one NHL-caliber skill and is below standard in other areas (like, say, Greg Zanon and shot blocking) as opposed to someone who is merely below average in all facets (like, say, Mike Mottau). At least with someone like Zanon, the coach can deploy them in situations they can excel the most and, therefore, squeeze some minutes out of them.

I am not sure which category Redden fits in. My gut says he's more Mottau than Zanon, but Redden can still pass the puck so perhaps Julien could get something out of him.

Overall, the more intriguing name for a 7th d-man that I've seen is Theo Peckham out of Edmonton. With the trade they just made Peckham is likely not going to make the roster (he is injured too, though). His physicality is NHL-caliber and I have got to believe if pressed into action Julien could match him up with slower players to utilize his skills best.

Either way I think the Bruins need another d-man who can do something if needed. Injuries are likely in a compressed season, not to mention relying on Hamilton to play all 48 seems foolhardy. I don't think aaron johnson is the answer so I'm looking for them to make a move.

Who do you think is the best fit out there?

When all are healthy I can see Redden being a 7th guy and keeping both Hamilton and Krug motivated to take that spot. I think he is a better option over Exelby or Johnson.

I'll believe anything on Soderberg when I see him in Black and Gold. Not holding my breath on though.

There's one small problem with your view of the Thomas situation... The cap floor is $44 mil this year. So no team is under the floor.

i'm just afraid the top line is going stink with looch being fat and horton being rusty. bergy's and kelly's lines might be doing all the scoring.

krejci playing point on #1 pp sounds interesting. better than joe corvo.

I think it is completely unfair that the buyout option wasn't available sooner. If it wasn't for such a high cap #, he would have been playing in the NHL in the last 3 yrs. Heck- I wouldn't mind him as a 6/7 dman for the Flames for $1mm.

Too bad, it tarnished his name in such a way that he will never recover in the eyes of many. He was one of the best Senators ever, and an amazing D-man for almost a decade.

Hope he catches on with a team.

Pretty sure Z and Redden didn't play together very much at all in Ottawa. That said, PC likes his Sens. I don't hate it as a depth move, but as I understand it he hasn't been playing at all this year so I'm curious what kind of shape the guys in.

Nice piece... Didnt realize 7 teams still had to get to the floor. Aren't any buyouts not able to be done til this summer though on guys like Redden and Gomez?
