I am curious how the re-entry waiver rule will work.

With the elimination of re-entry, does that allow team to get those players buried in their own systems to join their teams without being picked off? Does it also emilininate any '50% of the contract' rule on such players and what will happen to those teams who already have 50% contracts.

I'm curious how many things they're going to write, then realize "oops, maybe we should have thought this through a bit better" and make a knee-jerk decision to try and fix things.

#1 so far: compliance buyouts, Wade Redden and Scott Gomez.

No re-entry waivers means no need to put them through waivers on a recall; they come up to the team just like any other player, so other teams have no right to claim on the way back up and so there's no splitting of cap hits.

It doesn't prevent burying of contracts, but the "everything over ____" provision fixes that. Well, unless you're trying to bury a guy somewhere so you can get rid of him the upcoming summer - in which case, someone will probably get upset and so they're going to make something up to deal with it instead of having taken a little bit of time to think things through.

So any team not in the playoffs now has a shot at the 1st overall pick?

Yes - but we have no idea what the weighting scheme is for the drawing. It could be exactly like it was in the prior CBA.

What is the status of realignment? Would love to see the Wild in the same division as Chicago and Detroit. Just can't stay up long enough to watch the west coast teams.

Not a CBA topic per se, they've definitely punted it for 2013 and they'll probably punt it for '13-14 as well.

Detroit would most likely get realigned to the East if they went through realignment.

Wow, crying that you don't matter after you get your team back just one season earlier.

Yeah, you guys should feel completely neglected. Totally.

That said, Detroit switching with Winnipeg makes perfect sense.

*** For example, if a players earns $10 million in Year one, the salary can never increase or decrease more than $3.5 million over the course of the deal. ***

Is the variance of the entire contract set by the first year or is it from year to year.

For example: $10 million first year, $6.5 million second year. That drop is with in the 35% of $10 million. But could third year drop to $3 (i.e., $3.5 million drop) or only to $3.725 (the $2.275 million drop being 35% of $6.5 million)?

The $3.5 million drop each year would allow a pretty heavily front-loaded deal ($1 million minimum (for calculation purposes):

$10 - $6.5 - $3 - $1 - $1 - $1 - $1 - $1: $3.1 annual cap hit. 35% year-to-year:

$10 - $6.5 - $3.725 - $2.2 - $1.4 - $1 - $1 - $1 = $3.35 annual cap hit

There's a second provision that says the lowest salary has to be at least 50% of the highest salary. So, if Year 1 was $10 million the lowest salary that could be offered would be $5 million.
