John Jaeckel: Hawks "Close" On Deal Last Night - John Jaeckel
Hawks waiting for a "tweak" to do the deal?
Hawks are always waiting for a tweak, a better offer, another player back, a different player going....
And they don't get anything done.
Don't know the details of the proposed deal, but.... |

the loss of montador HAS impacted their plans?
Who was counting on him enough this year to consider trading hammer and/or leddy? the guys was concussed more than once last year & was moved to forward! what are they thinking? guess I haven't lowered my expectations enough |

Hey there JJ!!!
Glad to see you are back in business
Can you at least tell us if the goalie is from the East or West?
And if they would make this trade, prospects or roster players goin the other way?
In your opinion, would this trade make the Hawks a contender for the Cup? Or just a slightly better team?
Who has to tweak? Hawks? Or other team?
Thanks!!! |

The hawks are better without montador. Can they use his cap space?
Stan is good at trading hawks that have not reached their ceiling for prospects, this is the year the hawks should make a real run at the cup so lets see him aquire proven nhl talent |

Agree. Its always almost with the Hawks. JJ , you said you have to protect sources but on a scale from 1-10 how close and or excited would you be if the almost deal from last nite happened ? |

I hear ya, and you are consistent with some tweets I'm getting. Having followed these rumors pretty hard for 4 years now, I will tell you it feels like the Hawks are fairly intent on adding a goalie. Anything else is going to be incidental, I think.
A few thoughts also . . .
MANY, MANY more conversations take place than actual deals that happen.
Honestly, I report on conversations. really; the only guys who break actual deals and details are the guys who talk to GMs or people at the league office (Dreger, Kypreos, McKenzie, Ek) and they get details right before the deals are announced.
On the other hand, some of the conversations I report on do turn into deals, albeit often with different details than what I first hear/report—which goes back to ongoing conversations between teams, requested tweaks, etc
Not to be a Bowman defender, but I question how much of the Hawk indecision is Bowman himself, or the front office, second guessing apparatus around him (including McDonough and possibly other non-hockey functionaries). I still wonder if that dynamic wasn't the cause of the RFA fiasco in 2009.
I will say there is a pattern to be discerned here: the "marketing" of prospects, overpromotion onthe ice of said prospects and a corresponding unwillingness to deal prospects (or players) for needed NHL help.
I am hopeful, as a fan, that the Hawks break the pattern here soon, because I really don't think Sheldon Brookbank and Michal Rozsival are enough to change the fortunes of this team from last year.
And if they don't make a move, then I think the "official" line will become adding defensive depth, maturation of Kruger and Leddy, Saad is on the way, blah blah blah . . .

I don't really know what the deal was, except that it involved a goalie upgrade.
I am fairly sure it was with an Eastern team. Looking at those teams, I think you can guess it was Ottawa, the Islanders, possibly even NJ.
I think it is a safe bet Crawford would go the other way. And that it would be either a multi-player deal or a one for one goalie swap.
Taken together, and I am totally playing "Clue" here, I would guess it was Crawford and Stalberg for Nabokov or Anderson (and the Hawks are holding out for something else back— the "tweak"). But that is a very wild guess in the absence of a lot of information. |

Just got more info. Looks like deal is dead. Would have been significant. Other team asked a lot. But digging on it because I could see it being revived with different players involved.
(Not Anderson or Nabokov—for now anyway—either) |

A goalie upgrade would be super. I also would also rather ship out Stalberg and Crawford over Leddy and Crawford since a lot of other folks on the world wide web this morning are saying teams with D to deal are in the driver seat. |

What we'd all really like to know is if S.B. will EVER get a #2 Center.
And, no matter who is responsible for the timidity/reluctance to make deals, don't other teams eventually stop taking the Hawks seriously when it comes to trade talks. Or, not even try to deal with them at all because of this? |

I was in the crowd in Colorado in the 2010 playoffs when he put up a 50 save shut out against the Sharks. It was an incredible performance.
I could get behind Anderson. |
