Adam Kirshenblatt: The Demise of Brian Burke in Toronto - MasWE
You say: 1. He Rushed the Job
But Ek said
"Tallon was fired just days after signing free agents Marian Hossa and John Madden. Tallon drafted Kane and Toews, brought in Niemi, Versteeg, Keith, Campbell. Hjalmarsson, Barker and Bolland. He built a team slowly and the right way as Burke has done in Toronto..."
WHO DO I BELIEVE?!?! |

He started by rushing the job, slowed it down later but it was too late |

I think the moral of this story, which has been beaten to death in 24hrs is that he did not do a good enough job..... Story ends here. |

Everyone is being so revisionist it is reDONKulous. Ek's blog and comparrison to Chicago is the perfect example. Mayhe he is embarrassed that something this big went un-rumoured and needs to sound like an expert in hindsight. Certainly seems like that to me. |

Well written article Adam. Brian did the same thing in Vancouver; over-estimated the value of certain players and then stuck with them too long, made the media his enemy and in the process alienated the team from a lot of loyal fans, and would back himself into corners with his bold statements and self pride. I admire the guy for his loyalty to his own people, but it eventually all became just a tiresome gong show.
MG has made his mistakes like all GM's have, but what I appreciate in comparison is his common sense approach to developing the type of organization that appeals to players around the league, the new approaches to travel, sleep, diet, training and player amenities that are second to none. Loyalty is there, but it's all about what it takes to win long term.
Burke and Cherry have had a long standing feud going, but it seems that they are both the same type of personality, strong minded views, anti-corporate types. Perhaps when Cherry retires, Burke is the right guy to replace him. |

Good article. Thanks, Adam. It seems we agree; the Kessel trade ruined everything. Makes sense that Ek would spout on about 'patience'; that dude is completely lost. Glad he made this site though. |

Kessel trade took away the safety net. Even if the offseason moves didn't work out, the draft choices would have made him look like a hero at that time. Don't forget how popular "Tank Nation" was |

Wrong guy for the job from the start. - Two_For_Truth
Yup. |

My issue, outside of the Kessel Trade, is that Burke has set this team up perfectly for the new CBA. Decisions will have to be made on players like Phaneuf, Kessel, Lupul. We only have Grabs and JVR signed to contracts after next season.
I personally would have liked to have seen Burke given a little longer now that the free agency rules are more equal |

heard from numerous sources that Burke has gotten a 25 year old that works for mlse pregnant and he was already on a short leash with the board and that was enough. |

This is going to work out well for the Senators. Brian Murray has drafted some unbelievable talent. He'll retire, Burke will come in, get very lucky with a few key superstars like he did with Pronger (had to leave Edmonton, Cali's a nice spot) and Niedermayer (wanted to play with his bro), and Burke will end up with another Stanley Cup ring. |

Burke should never have made the Kessel trade, it was insane, and Kessel now has no interest in re-signing with the Leafs. None whatoever.
And the number one reason Burke was fired? He wouldn't recognize an NHL goaltender if it crawled into bed and spent the night with him. |
