I was hoping for a 4 or 5 year extension at 4 per, but maybe I'm undervaluing him? I love Smid, I think he's a high end defensive d-man, I just have a hard time thinking he'd get more than 4.5 a year.

Yah it's kind of funny. Any fan you talk to likely wouldn't go over 4.5 by much for Smid. Yet, if he was on the market, I can garantee an owner would toss stupid 5-6 million per money at him and then wonder why they aren't making money.

this year was really the litmus test imo. last year was only his first truly standout season. he showed flashes previously, but had some major growing pains over the years.
if he had another strong campaign, id absolutely give him 4.5 long term.
5-6 is a stretch though

This is exactly why I have a hard time finding even an ounce of sympathy for the owners.
Give Smid 21.3751183329922 million for 5 years. He likes Edmonton, so he'll be willing to live below the poverty line to stay here. At 4.275 million per year, he'll need to get a roommate, and he'll need to eat No-name food products, but I think he'll be willing to do it.
