I love how Yzerman was aggressive in filling this team's needs this summer with Lindback, Carle and Salo in particular. Salo and Carle should make the PP that much better and fit well into a puck possession style system.

Should also give Boucher a little more confidence in the defense so we can move away from the sort-of-trap style game. Started to open up towards the end of last season once we added Lee, Aulie and Commodore. Salo and Carle are ever better upgrades.

Question now becomes whether or not we get a season.

Another good write up man. I have to say you are producing consistent good articles. I commend you good sir. I would also agree I like how Stevie has went after the under the radar guys. Salo and Carle are both good pick ups for your team. Along with Lindback. I myself have been a fan of Carle for some time now. Id take him over any Philly dman every day of the week. Putting up big numbers or not. Hes consistent and isnt gonna lose you a game.

Thanks! I really appreciate your consistent readership of my work. It's nice to have fans from other teams tune in with their perspective on things.

The Kings blogger is a waste of skin. BUt its nice to see another blogger putting out stuff about the team and not the lock out. I enjoy the insight on all teams. Would be nice if all teams bloggers had real input. I have seen some other bloggers put up some good stuff. But you have been keeping it good for a while now since the lockout. I appreciate it as a fan of hockey.

Completely agreed, I know that bloggers get paid for hits on this site but I definitely respect the bloggers that write from an objective(non-homer) point of view and write about players/teams/leagues/issues that they actually have good knowledge about. Blogging an opinion that you truly don't believe in, and just to generate hits is weak. Not to mention that you can gain a loyal group of readers instead of just a random fanbase that you're trolling and who knows, maybe your writing could get recognized and help further your career as a writer/blogger. Nothing against the other guys, but my favourite bloggers on this site are JJ, Meltzer, Yost, Tessier, and Stuart.

Your one of the few writing blogs about teams/players/prospect and what not. There are a few others writing good stuff. As the other guys said about the guys he likes. They do indeed write good blogs to. Yost is one of my favorite bloggers as well. I like frenchies insight on stuff. But its nice to get stuff that isnt CBA and lockout related. Id read blogs for every team if it were about theyre top prospects and how theyre doing. Even about the under the radar players. I scan through the other blogs that are usually cba lockout rubbish to see if there happens to be something about theyre teams players. I dont really know crap for my own teams minor team because our blogger doesnt write about the. Even when there is hockey he doesnt write about the Kings. Almost feels like i know more about the Bolts than my own team. But I know enough about my own team. Just wish there was more insight on them.

Stuart keep dishing out these blogs. Your fans and fans of your team will really continue to appreciate it.

Good stuff Mr. Stuart. I like Matty Carle, he was a solid player for the Flyers. His game noticeably improved, and his consistency despite a carousel of partners was a bright spot on a defense corps plagued by untimely injuries. He's definitely a puck mover, but his dependable defensive game is oft overlooked. The one thing I wish he was better at was actually finding the twine. He piled up the apples but so rarely lit the lamp himself.

Thats a pretty dependable group of defense to be honest. Stevie Y did a solid job...nice to see a post about the game and not the CBA.

"He won’t post massive offensive numbers, but he won’t be caught making mistakes on a regular basis. Simply put, he is a safe player to have on the roster."

I've been watching at least 75% of Flyers game's on TV the last two seasons and Matt Carle plays 20ish minutes a night so I've seen a lot of him. My assessment of him is very different of yours.

You can count on a ton of assists from him. I think he led the NHL is even strength points for a defenseman two season ago with Pronger.

But you WILL catch him making mistakes on a regular basis. I get nervous whenever he's in our zone. He's quick on transition defense stopping a rush, but he generally does a poor job of covering his man and protecting the crease. He's good for at least one brutal turnover per game.

All in all I'd rather have him than not have him, but I would NOT call him a "safe player to have on the roster."

Timonen is done soon. So that is a very easy yes. How could anyone take a brain dead Pronger over him. I would def take him over Coburn. Simply because he is more reliable. Coburn is a still a wild card to me.

I have also watched pretty much every Flyers games for years now, including pretty much all of the games during Carle's stay in Philly. And I disagree with your assesment of Carle. Carle is certainly not mistake free, but to say that he makes mistakes on a regular basis is innacurate. He is very reliable in his own end, is solid in his coverages. And Carle doesn't turn the puck over any more then any other puck moving defenseman who handles the puck as much as he does. In fact probably less the a lot of top minute offensive defenseman. He's also a very good shot blocker. His weaknesses are since he's not that big of a guy, he can get outmuscled around the net. And he doesn't have a great shot, so he's really not a true PP QB. But he will greatly aid the TB transition and puck moving game. Especially at ES strength in which he excels. Bottom line is that Yzerman isn't signing him to that kind of deal if what you say about Carle is accurate.

Yzerman knows Carle's strengths and weaknesses. He knew he wanted him and he knew he had to outbid other teams to sign him. Holmgren knows Carle's strengths and weaknesses but there was no way he was giving him 5.5 for 6 years.

I guess I was exaggerating a bit to say he makes mistakes on a regular basis. But the turnovers he DID make were so brutal that they often ended up in the back of the net. I liked having him in Philly but I won't miss him.

Your PP was 25th and those two will surely help.

Your PK was 26th and I guess it's up to Lindback to help that.

It's annother exaggeration to state that the turnovers he did make were so brutal that they often ended up in the back of the net. The evidence just doesn't support that. He makes a few bone head gaffes in a Season, just as any defenseman does, who's not a top level defenseman. He's very reliable overall with the puck. That's why he's a top minutes player, and why Yzerman signed him to that deal. Holmgren thought he was getting Weber and gambled and lost out. You may not miss him, but unless some other players on Philly's back end step up, he will be missed if they ever play again,
TB got themselves a very good player.
