Any idea on how they would rectify any sort of scheduling imbalances (i.e. uneven amount of inter-division matchups, or a team that starts the season on an 8 game road trip, etc.)?

They are going to have to remake all the schedules to balance remaining games, plus teams will need to re-book travel plans, etc. Let alone the logistics of getting all the players back and having a short training camp.

So you got 19 days to do that.

And a deal ain't even signed yet.

Get real.

Making a new schedule takes what? 1 day? The next day the people within the organizations that are paid to make travel arrangements do their jobs, like they are supposed to. The players are under contract with their NHL teams so they are well aware that when a new CBA is cut they are to return back to their respective posts, unless they're Russian then they can apparently do whatever they feel like.

It's not out of the question to start a reduced season quickly, if what Ek suggests actually happens.

They don't have a deal in place!

That alone, at best, is a week away _IF_ they are anywhere near a deal at this point, plus time for player vote and owners approval...

So bast case/guess scenario, you are likely down to 2 weeks to get everything done, including some bastardized version of a training camp.

And if you think they can make a new schedule, figure out how to balance division, conference, opposing conference games, while minimizing travel time and expenses takes 1 day, you have no clue how the real world works.

There is ZERO chance Black Friday is a realistic target date.

The bigger question is whether they're going to actually have a CBA that fixes the problems in the prior one without creating new problems, or whether we have half-assed solutions to non-problems that create more problems that require an agreement to make major changes to the new CBA in 3-4 years and/or guarantees that the new CBA doesn't survive much past its scheduled expiration date.

I'm betting heavily on the latter.

In 1994-95, they reached an agreement on January 11 and started playing January 20. Of course, the NHL had also been creating a new schedule each time games were cancelled to reflect the fact that the season was going to be shorter, so when they had an agreement they had a 48-game schedule ready to go; if they haven't been doing the same thing, they'll need a little bit of time to do that (even if it means throwing it into a computer and letting it spit a schedule out).

They can't do it all in 1 day, but starting on Black Friday is doable if they get a deal done in the next couple of days.

I'm aware there isn't a deal in place, I read the gossip just like you. If the schedule makers and travel lacky's can't get things in line within a few days then maybe they shouldn't have jobs. I'm glad you know how the world works, you make it easier fo dem dum ppl like me to undahstand wut ppl kan or kant dew.

Why do I suspect the NHLPA is gonna throw a poop fit if they are not part of the decision on how the new schedule is made...

If both sides were close to a deal, then perhaps it could get done. But I do not think we are anywhere close to a deal being done, nor has there been any indications of that being plausible, in the next few days.

I still believe there is more of a likelihood the season gets cancelled than a deal in place so games start on Black Friday.

Maybe he loves the sport but has no confidence in the people running the league and on the players side. I'm sure he isn't the only one feeling that way.

No. The schedule will likely continue as is. Any changes or additional plans would be added to the orginal end of season schedule.

They are not going to play an 82 game schedule.

So unless they want an unbalanced schedule, they need to recreate the schedule to account for number of games for division, conference, and opposing conference.

Otherwise, solely as a plausible example, you could have 1 team in a division have say 10 games against division rivals and another team in the same division having 7 left. Hardly balanced.

Likely they will try to use the existing schedule as a basis, but it will have to be heavily modified.
