There are a few ways to make pucks:

1) Play online tournaments. Rookie Cup has no entry requirements, and if you win the tournament you can make 4000 pucks (4 games, plus the tournament bonus)... but you have to win.

2) play the market. It's really hard when you don't have pucks, but basically look for guys who are going well below market value, buy them and then sell them at market value. For example, just this past weekend I found a Lecavalier going cheap. I won him for 5400 pucks. I then flipped him and sold him for 7500. Quick and easy 2000 pucks.

3) Unfortunately.... luck. I got lucky and hit a Start of the Week Joe Thornton about a month back. That sold for 90000 pucks. I've been using those pucks to fill out my roster and buying the odd pack. The lowest I've been was about 48,000, and then I played the market to get back up to about 72,000. I then bought a mega deal pack this past weekend using those pucks and got a Earhoff start of the week card that sold for 58,000 pucks. So now I'm back over 100,000 pucks. But I'm constantly checking for deals in the auction house.

As a hint, you don't need to pay 40,000+ pucks for some better players. Guys like Pomenville, Williams, Booth, Skinner, RNH all go for around 5000 pucks and all are speedy players with a good shot. Guys like J. Staal, E. Staal, Lucic, Horton are beasts with and without the puck and can go for as little as 10,000 pucks.

This is my team thus far:

Gagne - Gretzky (Pre-order bonus) - Williams
D. Sedin - Kesler - Booth
Lucic - Bergeron - Savard
MacCarthur - Lombardi - Armstrong

Suter - Karlesson
Boumeester - Burns
Earhoff - Wisnewski

Gotta play the market to stockpile big amounts of pucks. Contracts cost you about 15-20 pucks per game if you use the PeeWee or Bronze pack or whatever it is ... so essentially every 2 games you play if you average 600ish pucks earned, you'll need to spend 1 just on contracts. You can bank some playing tourneys but it takes a while.

I don't have the patience to play the market looking for deals as it is pretty time consuming so I tend just to play tourney's. Jumbo mega deals will come out eventually so you'll be able to buy decent packs for 2500. Until then don't waste pucks on anything other than the little packs.

Also I take great satisfaction in using my average to good team to beat the 500k puck teams that are stacked top to bottom

My team that I tend to roll with FWIW ... fits requirements for the main online tourney's and the RH tourney:

E. Cole (BOS) - P. Bergeron - T. Seguin
B. Marchand - D. Krejci - B. Wheeler (BOS)
D. Paille - C. Kelly - R. Peverley
C. Bourque - S. Griffith - J. Knight

OEL (BOS) - J. Boychuk
A. Goligoski (BOS) - A. Ference
M. Mottau - D. Hamilton (BOS)

T. Thomas
D. Dubnyk (BOS)

Playing the market is huge but it's hard for teams like myself that don't spend all their real money to buy players or the limited edition of the game. I got lucky on one gold pack that I did purchase and got Hossa and Phaneuf. Other than that it has just been buying smart and winning games. I won 10 straight games at one point which helped me win both the Rookie and Pro playoff and i was able to stash away some pucks.

Jussi Jokinen-Ruutu-Hossa
McDonald- P. Marc Bouchard - Setoguchi
Morrow-Weiss-Versteeg
Paille-Brassard-Huselius

Phaneuf- Michael Liles
Daley-Goligoski
Gleason-Timmonen

NHL 13 is actually been a great passy for me while the D-Bags in the NHL get it together. I like the Online Drop In Mode the best. Anyone else playing? johnnybhawk

UHT is a money grab, they make it so you need to spend money to really imporove your team, just when you gets a good number of pucks saved you need contracts for everyone and need to buy packs to get back going

best way is to win tournys

I've found that the chemistry is a much greater factor in this year's HUT. At first I tried buying a random assortment of players from the market for cheap to add to my starting team, but didn't have much success. I then sold all those players and replaced them with pieces to build chemistry with guys I got in free packs, and I've been on a tear ever since. It may not be the flashiest bunch (they make it really hard to be successful without using money/MS points to buy packs), but they get the job done when needed.

My lineup:

Emmerton/Hudler/Eaves
Talbot/Schenn/Read
Cooke(COL)/McClement/Kobasew
Ellis/Ebbett(BUF)/Kaleta

Brewer/Gervais
Seidenberg/Corvo
Leddy/Montador

agreed, chemistry is definetly huge in this version of HUT, i've been frustrated with this game but i'm finally getting used to it and ever since the patch where every clapper off an offensive zone draw doesnt go in its been FAR better my team might seem stacked but its only because i pulled a SOTW MATT DUCHENE (starts with a 96 speed amongst his other jacked stats) and sold him for 150k pucks this allowed me to get the team i'm satisfied with

my lineup

Kane-Bergeron-Simmonds
Perron-Vermette-Perry <--(thank u Duchene)
Semin-J.Staal-Okposo
Gionta-Stoll-Carter

Kulikov-Pietrangelo <--thank u Duchene
OEL-Larsson
Gorges-Subban <--thank u Duchene

Rinne <--THANK YOU Duchene

so yeah as you can see if ur ever lucky enough to pull a SOTW (non euro) its better to get the returns instead of using em

it also helped that i got 50k pucks from EA from nhl12 HUT reward

couple pointers

until you start to accumulate pucks, try to put junior players on your fourth line. my 4th line maybe gets maybe a couple half shifts a game before I get a whistle. it is not worth wasting contract games for NHL players to get such little ice time.

Also, dressing lesser players reduces the number of stars your team is ranked, which impacts the puck multipliers each game.

look for value players with some good stats. players with 80-84 rankings can usually be had for fairly cheap compared to those with 85 to 87 rankings, there are some exceptions though. look for players with good speed (radulov, cogliano, raymond) that are not as good defensively, and use them in yout top 6. they may not score as much, but they will give you better chances to get to the net (or get back on defense) than slower players.

as others have said, buy low, sell high. this is somewhat time consuming but if you hit the auctions at the right time, you can get value items that you can then sell for more. i like to target consumables rather than players as everyone needs consumables while players are often based on likes or dislikes, especially the ones you get for cheap.

Use the buy it now maximum searches to look for cards that are selling cheaper than normal, or watch the ones ending right away to try to get some value picks.

FYI, my team (from memory)

Carter - Gretzky (CE bonus) - Radulov
AKostitsyn - Fisher - Erat
E Cole - C Wilson - C Smith
Plug 1 - Plug 2 - Plug 3

Alzner - Carlson
Quincey - White
Orlov - Wideman

Bryzgalov (Was for chem)
Brodeur/Lindback

I am not a nashville fan, but they have a wealth of solid 83-85 guys that go for cheap.
