I don't think there will be much progress made until it gets closer to the Winter Classic. Bettman won't want to lose that.

contractify

Move a team to Quebec or Hamilton and expunge two out of phoenix, dallas, florida, tampa or columbus or just get rid of 4, would be a nightmare to sort out those contract / fa issues but it is a mess anyways.

NYI has stadium issues, they could probably be moved or eliminated as well though they have some rabid fans (not in an insulting way but i can think of no other accurate word). New Jersey is going to be a mess on the ice and financially. 3 teams in California may be too many. They have options if they want to make it a true "for profit" venture and really get blood thirsty.

Or they could continue to piss off a generation of fans, make no real "significant" changes and move forward with a deal that is pretty meh for everyone and have us scratching our heads as to what this was all about.

The sad reality is, this is the way everyone in the top .01% handles their business in America today. They are limited only by their own greed and arrogance. They'll complain all day about how they're losing money yet they pay Bettman 8 mil a year because he knows how to strong arm unions and he's well worth the investment from the owners point of view.

It's simple, just take a ten point reduction in salary, and with the projected growth of the league, you'll end up making the same anyway. Sound familiar? It's the same thing that's happening to everyone in this country. Middle class incomes remain stagnant while all the growth goes to the rich.

Why? If you have a union, you can actually fight this kind of sh!t. I support the players 100%.

Sorry bro, you are just way off base here. Millionaires fighting billionaires, no real victims here. JJ makes a salient point and that is some cities realistically can not support a team and trying to find revenue sharing formulas to make it happen, including salary caps, is not really helping or healthy.

Unions cause more problems than they solve.

That's all I have to say about that.

Contraction makes sense but neither Bettman or the PA want that.

The best we can hope for is relocation of a team or two. Or better yet, as Puck Daddy points out- shutter a team or two and then charge the new city an expansion fee rather than relocation fee.

In some NHL circles, a more drastic solution is envisioned. The Coyotes could simply be folded, its 23 players sent to other NHL teams through a dispersal draft and the league would operate with 29 teams next season.

This would allow the NHL to collect expansion fees of $200-million or more each from Seattle and Quebec City, the top candidates for NHL teams, rather than a single relocation fee of $60-million or so for the Coyotes. That is a gain of at least $200-million if a total loss of $200-million is assumed on the NHL's investment in the Coyotes.

How great would that be?

-Kill the Phoenix franchise (necessary)
-Hold a dispersal draft (fun for fans)
-Let Quebec add $200mil in revenue instead of $60 mil (good for the league)

Wow... Looks like the lock-out is really taking a toll on some of us... The NHL is depressing enough on its own right now. We don't need politics to really drive it home...

I have no real idea, but I would hope we get some games in on Black Friday.

The real battle is wealthy owners vs rich owners. In the end the owners will continue to take concessions out of players salary, benefits, insurance, etc (matter of time). Owners created this environment and are now trying to use the economy as an excuse to take back money. Which is mind blowing when league is running at an old time high, I don't understand both sides when both refuse to meet.

Please don't compare the NFL revenue to the NHL revenue. Apples to Oranges.

Sorry, but you are the one who is wrong. The victims here are the fans. Prices go up year after year in tickets, concessions, and parking; while these a-hole owners keep whining about losing money. Nobody is putting a gun to their heads and saying to pay these ridiculous contracts to the players. I don't blame the players for a second for going out and getting as much as they can. The real issue is that the league wants the players to fix the system. They (the large market owners) don't want to help out the small markets owners, who in all reality shouldn't have an NHL franchise. Get rid of the Phoenix's, the Florida's, the Columbus's and either put them in a markets that can actually support the clubs, like Quebec, Hamilton, Or God-Forbid another team in Toronto. Contraction, though the best option, will never happen so move these poor markets to better markets. I, also, have ZERO sympathy for the owners. Make the players and owners 50/50 partners and if teams are still struggling, move or fold up shop. End of Story!!! It will be a long, long time before I step foot in the UC, or another NHL building. I, instead, will focus my money more on teams like the IceHogs, who make it actually affordable for a family to go to a game.

It is really simple: money is the root of all evil. Rich people are evil. Poor people are all good and pure. There should be a salary cap for the whole world. What can a family of 5 live on? $50 thousand? $70 thousand? 100 grand? Further, the workday should only be 5 hours. You should only work 3 or 4 days a week, and 170 days a year. I think most people would like that. Plenty of time for going to the beach, zoo, bars, and a million vacations.
