As long as there is room for some of the players to go elsewhere to play, the NHLPA has no power IMO, since the rest of the crew that isnt able to play in the AHL or juniors, is not going to be pleased while eveyone else is feeding their families and they are skating around wondering how they are going to pay their bills...

Never seen a labor union that is completely united when it comes to a strike for the very same reasons you mention.

These are athletes we're talking about. How many athletes live humble lives? Especially these "lower tier" players who haven't been able to bank millions each year.

People get used to living in their income brackets, and spending that income, so you can bet that, even though players are making something like 750k MINIMUM (I keep reading that average NHL salaries are 2.4M), their lifestyle has them spending most of it.

Saying they can't put food on the table is crazy, and used on purpose i imagine, but realistically when they've gone how many months without pay now, and won't be getting paid until a lockout ends (other than some "minimal" amount the NHLPA banks for players as contingency), I imagine it will start to hurt these botton 3/4 of the league while their proud union brethren go make their millions in Europe...

I'd imagine it looks like the top tier guys are crossing their own picket line to the majority of those who don't have the luxury of going elsewhere.

I have a few employees that work for me that a few years ago got large raises due to some union related negotiations (I am talking an increase in more than double their pay). What did that do for them gave them more play money... Since it is semi-seasonal work a few of them still get laid off in the winter time and come spring they are all asking for an advance in their pay because they didn't save up for the upcoming layoff and are now behind on their bills.. It makes me feel sad for the future if this is how short sighted people are.

The NBA Players' Union made a big stink about the likes of Kobe Bryant going to Europe to play during its lockout last year for this very reason. It lessens the Union's negotiating power by a lot. For as brilliant as Donald Fehr is supposed to be (and I do think he is), it boggles my mind how many details he's missing in this thing. He seems to be playing a PR game only, and doing very little to counter the leverage that the owners actually have.

While I do agree that fiscal irresponsibility is a vice among some players, I think their main beef isn't so much that they're financially hurting as it is the fact that a professional athlete has a limited window to make that kind of money. Losing a whole year of it is a pretty big deal, no matter how much you have saved.

this i agree with.. but maybe the need to recognize that themselves and not blow it all while they are makin it.. but that is just me and i am a certified cheap ass (ask my family and friends, especially my wife)

i know it baffles the crap out of me.. then the female dog an moan to me when i have to lay them off because i am taking food out of their childs mouth. I want to explain it to them but i learned a long time ago that once you start helping people they start thinking of you as their life coach, and it gets tiring..

My favorite example was the employee that lost his home to foreclosure and filed for bankruptcy because as he said it his wife like to use their credit cards. Once all the papers were filed and they were free of the debt he had to rent his place of living... His mortgage was $600 a month, he went and rented a place that was $750 a month.. Bankruptcy was like wiping the slate clean for this guy.

I am hoping that this lockout will push more quality players to the ECHL, which has a team in Fort Wayne.

Not that I feel bad for the income these players typically make, but most of them buy property within their means. Cars, housing, whatever. When they are expecting to be able to pay those bills every month and are suddenly not making a dime, things can get pretty strenuous.

lack of foresight and planning can do that to you... Do they really need the expensive car? or could they settle for the 30k nice vehicle that they can pay cash for and not have the loan? As for housing, i would guess they don't all own housing in the town they play in, especailyl when they are young but again you should be able to have 6 months "rent" or more saved for those rainy days..

I pretty sure I heard they have something from last year they are getting paid in October. So this may drag on.

if the NHL and NHLPA really cared about the fans and not the money there wouldn't be a lockout right now. after all they are arguing over the revenue we give to them. it's just billionaires and millionaires arguing over money.
