This is the third labor stoppage for Bettman .....I believe Fehr has been involved in twice as many.....Both will not give up the "big" chip which is shutting the league down....
In the end the stoppage could backfire on the both the players and the owners off some of the weaker teams if fans from these fair weather markets loose interest....Players loose jobs and league becomes weaker and less valuable if teams fail .
Actually it would look good on the both of them....I do tend to agree with the players on this one....They gave alot last time and really have already said they are willing to give again....
Great legacy Bettman....like he cares anyways!!!!!

I really don't understand why they can't play through the negotiations. If say the postal service goes on strike, it's cuz they've been negotiating for like a year before that.

The only way the NHL opens training camp on September 15 is if they think Fehr will call a strike before the start of the regular season. Otherwise, by opening up camp they undercut their own position that "we can't work in the current system" [which would apply once training camp starts] and that could potentially negate leverage and negotiating positions down the road if either side goes to the legal system to try and force a solution.

Because it weakens the owners' leverage.

Not true.

They then force the players in to their teams and camps and do not allow them to go to Europe. Opening day is not for a month and the players are not paid until October. The NHL still has the lockout card to play at a later date and it by no means negates their position. I hope this happens.

Why are these (frank)ers not sitting the (frank) down at a table every (frank)ing day to get this done? I am sick of hearing someone has this trick up their sleeve, or they don't want to drop that chip yet. NO ONE MAKES MONEY IF THERE IS A LOCKOUT!! They should be meeting 12 hours a (frank)ing day 7 (frank)ing days a week until this is resolved. My rant for the week....

Starting the season (getting to the point of playing games) and then locking players out would be the worst PR move possible. Good luck with shutting down the season just before games and then negotiating on time to have the national games or winter classic.

Who cares, fully ready for a lockout.....
Baseball Playoffs, College & NFL Football plus minor league and junior hockey....I'm a Leafs fan and it's best for the franchise if we miss this season....We'll be heavilly represented in the weighted draft lottery, poor teams will have to close their doors due to lack of interest in those markets.....This is a good thing.......lock em out

The one big difference not mentioned is that in 1994 the CBA expired in September 30. Thus the reason for October 1st lockout. Those problems were rectified by changing the expiry date to September 15th....before training camp started.

I agree 100% with your post. What pisses me off is that it the owners that put in place the current system. (By taking the players to the cleaners in the last CBA) As well as the ones that sign the cheques every payday on these insane contracts. And now the solution to their mismangment is to lock out the players until they are able to take them to the cleaners once again. We will be in the exact same spot once that CBA is up becasue of misamnagement.

Good grief, Eklund... I fully praise you for clinging to the last straw kind of attitude but I think we all should accept the simple and bitter fact that unfortunately, there will be no miracle, camps won't open on time, meaningful games will be cancelled while the millionaires attempt to make peace with other millionaires.

U dont care because the team will be a bottom feeder if a season is played.....

Burke likely hoping for the same because it's the only way he can survive without getting canned...

That's correct......Tired of the Leafs flippin the bill for half the leagues problem teams and then can't position itself to sign a top tier free agent in 7 yrs...It's pretty sad when Canadian kids avoid cities like Toronto and Montreal because of the pressure.
I hope the owners lockout the players and stay lockout....Richest team in the league by far can't attract big name free agents it's a disgrace to the league.
Imagine the Yankees, Lakers, Cowboys & other great franchises being unable to attract big name players.....It's a F-ing disgrace to be a hockey/Leaf fan....Hope Habs fans feel the same way....Unless your happy signing Erik Cole's every year...

The Rangers and the Flyers seem to makes big splashes every offseason. Maybe Toronto and Montreal would attract more free agents if they had a competent GM and could ice a semi competitive team.

It's not the rest of the teams/league thats to blame for the leafs failures...Blame ownership and the useless GM's they continue to employ...
