"Their average age was 28" No! Radek Davorak doesnt count either does stillman. You have no Weiss, Frolik, or Booth.
Have fun with Feaster! |

No kidding!
There are so many variables that come into play: talent in the draft, success with that talent, success in trading older assets, production of players on the ice, etc. The strategy has payed off to some degree for the Panthers, but replicating what worked won't be guaranteed. Hell, even seeing the playoffs again this year for the Panthers is far from a sure thing.

Colin Dambrauskas: The Calgary Flames And The Florida Panthers... - Colin Dambrauskas
I see what you are trying to do here Colin, but I think its flawed in a few areas.
The Panthers play in a very weak division and were lucky to come out of it.
Your making the assumption (and its a HUGE assumption IMO) that Hudler, Cervenka and Wideman are upgrades over Jokinen, Kostopolous, Moss and Hannan.
I dont see the Flames in the playoffs again this year sorry to say... |

Why doesnt Stillmans 58gp, or Dvoraks 76gp for the Panthers in 2009-10 count, exactly? |

Sorry, perhaps I wasnt clear. The assumption that I was making wasnt that those players specifically would replace them, it was merely that they let certain players go and brought in younger ones to allow for replacements. |

I would argue that drafting 3rd overall back to back years in 2010 and 2011 is not exactly "retooling on the fly". |

This team can literally turn their fortunes around in a heartbeat if they trade Jbo, Kipper, and Iginla. Obviously the sooner the better. You'd get enough back in NHL ready talent that the team can remain competitive as well as Colin suggests. |

They were in the playoff hunt for parts of both of those years up until certain points though. Not the same as a team like EDM that is just one of the worst in the league all year (save the first two months of this past season where they looked half decent).
They also already have themselves back in the playoffs. |

I agree with Colin's point about not necessarily having to blow up, but the Panthers basically brought in a new team at last years Free Agency.
They took advantage of their draft position and drafted well, which will pay off for them soon I'm sure.
I still only see Florida as a pseudo-playoff team. I mean, if they were in any other division in the league, do they make the playoffs? I don't see it. |

kipper deal i actually don't mind.
I still wish jbo/backland for Statsny/Gaunce could be an option because it gets a true center whereas Flip is like Cammy and better on the LW
Jbo and Backlund for Filppula, Erricson, Emmerton and Sproul. FLip and ericsson are nice, but rather keep backland if he's what gets the other two, or get 2013 picks that can be used to trade up. Or if backlands included make it Flip/Smith
Iggy trade not sure about
The big hole in net that we would be left with would be a worry. I'm not a fan of leiland and think he'll peak as a back up

You have not posted one objective comment on the Flames so whatever you write is just the ramblings of an Oilers Kool Aid drinker.
Oiler's fans shat all over Jokinen for 3 years, "he is brutal, bad in the room, doesn't care" (none of which was true) and now that he is gone, the upgrades don't compare???
You don't think that.....
Jiri Hudler, Roman Cervenka and Dennis Wideman are upgrades over Ollie, Moss and Hannan?????
Hudler and Ollie might be close but Moss never played as he was always hurt and scored 20 once
If you really believe Wideman is not an upgrade over Hannan you should drop the bottle you're drinking and go to a meeting. |

Subbing out Blacker for Scrivens helps. Gives you an NHL goalie and makes it easier for TO to swallow, as they really like Blacker. Let Scrivens and Irving duke it out for #1.

Don't think it was a knock on the Fames, per se. Florida has had the opportunity to draft higher and get some more highly regarded prospects than the Flames who have always fielded a fairly competitive team (even when doubters felt they weren't going to). Florida has that advantage in comparing the turnaround of the 2 teams. Calgary will need to get their restocking through the trades, I think. |

Calgary was 4 points back of the Panthers and 2 back of the Capitals. They would be SE division elite. |

That really depends on how they would play in the SE or vice versa. Just because they got that many points in the also weak NW does not mean they would have done so in the east. |

Also I don't see how they would be SE division elite in either conference they wouldn't have made the playoffs!
And if your trying to say well if they played against the SE all the time they would have. Did you forget who else is in your division second to last oliers, 24th place wild and 20th place avalanche. So not much better the difference is the SE at least saw two playoff berths. |
