Todd Cordell: What's the Biggest Question Mark for the Devils Entering 2012-13? - Todd.Cordell
Biggest question mark is the forwards, in my opinion.
Hedberg and Brodeur both showed at certain points last year that they had a good hockey left in them, so I am not too concerned. I'm sure the Devils are smart enough not to play Brodeur when he's obviously struggling and vice versa, now more than ever Brodeur needs to take a step back.
As for the forwards, there is a lot of question mark over who will pick up the slack. One or two players will need to have a breakout year, Tedenby, JJ, fourth line, etc while the rest of the forwards keep the same pace as last year. Even then, that's unrealistic expectations as practically our whole top six had some of the best years of their career last year, including Kovalchuk, Henrique, Elias, Clarkson, and Zubrus. |

I know we all play the lines game and make them, but why cant Clarkson step up more ? None of us would of ever expected him to be a 30 goal scorer right? What if next season he proves us wrong and takes another huge leap forward? |

I think the devils out played themselves last year
I think anywhere from 10-6 is plausible |

Secondary scoring...
Not sure Clarkson can pick up the pace.
Not sure we have anyone coming up from minors to chip in.
Not sure Uncle Lou goes trade route.
Not sure any UFAs on the radar. |

I don't get this.
During the season they suffered from an insane amount of injuries and had some weak depth, but they only hovered on the bubble. Then, the Devils were able to add guys like Zajac, Ponikarovski, Bernier, Gionta, Zidlicky to that roster. The roster the Devils had, fully healthy, at the end of last year was as good as any in the league.
The thing the Devils have a problem with this year is the opposite of last year. The fourth line quality depth guys are there, but they are lacking the top six talent that they had last year. |

A lot of his goals were a combination of luck and being on the first PP unit. Likely, Zajac is going to take his spot and he's going to lose a significant amount of goals that way. I'd be happy if he hits 20 again, there was a lot of times where there was a rebound in front and he cashed it in, or the puck was on the line and going in and he was the last to touch it. |

Shouldn't Zajac take Parise's spot on the first PP? |

Should be a new format, but if they stick with the umbrella, Zajac could or Henrique could. The idea was to have a lefty there because he could move out in front of the net and can pass back easily to the lefty on the half boards.
Likely, the first PP is likelygoing to be Zidlicky at the point, Elias and Kovalchuk at the halfboards, Zajac in the slot, and Zubrus/Henrique down low. The second unit will probably be Larsson at the point, ZUbrus/Henrique and Kovalchuk at the half boards, Clarkson in the slot, and someone like Josefson down low.
Matt Shaw, the new PP coach, might change everything up. Personally, for me, I like the box format with a guy in the slot and in that format, you can easily change into a umbrella to get Kovalchuk the one-timer. |

I think I'd rather see Henrique play down low. |

It doesn't matter who plays down low on the first unit because nobody is going to do that stupid poop jam play that parise always went for. Have yet to see that crap work on the power play. |

Parise has always sucked on the PP. That year he scored 44 he had a ton of goals on the rush and breakaways. |

He's just not easy to try and set up on the PP. He was always more effective 5 on 5. |

Josh Koshman of the NY Post: The Post has learned that New Jersey Devils owner Jeff Vanderbeek is still about $20 million short for his overdue loans, and there is only a week to go. Creditors are “poised to pounce” on August 14th, and he could lose control of the team.
“He had worked out a deal to raise a certain amount and has not been able to do that,” a source said.
Vanderbeek has been negotiating with lenders and the NHL to remain in control even if he can’t raise the money. Last September Vanderbeek missed an $80 million repayment. He then promised lenders he’d have $40 million by August 14th.
