Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Can Simmonds, Read and Talbot Duplicate 2011-12 Success?

Good stuff, Bill.

Think that Briere's up and down play hurt Simmonds consistency at all? I wonder if Briere's streakiness was a result of Simmonds or the other way around.

I could see Talbot and Read bounce around the top 9 in case of injuries and manage to see some time on scoring lines, as well as being used as defensively strong forward roles.

Thanks for the great read Bill.

All I have to say about Simmonds is he needs to bulk up a bit. Broken finger or not he got overpowered in the NJ series. I think he will improve in that area but for now with him being a power-forward he needs to increase his strength for those board battles. As for the other stuff I think that will come with time.

Depends on what you mean. Will they both match their goal outputs? They could. But each player will be one year better. They will both be given a bigger bite of the offense as well.

So I say, overall, yes.

Can Ville Leino duplicate his 2011-2012 success?

I think most definitely!

That's because it was dumb. And racist.
- Tartan69

dont kill the messenger...i mean, sure its funny, and god knows i thought it too.

unfortunately your mind immediately thinks racism, my mind thinks thats funny. it would have been funny if it said pronger, schenn, or anyone else for that matter.

so remind me, exactly who is the racist?

Bill I hope you are right about Simmonds sticking around. We like him in our household.
We actually have an inside joke about him.

2 of our friends went to an early season game and the stranger sitting next to them would jump to his feet and scream “SIMMONDS” at the top of his lungs every time SImmonds touched the puck. After about the 4th time this went from scary to hysterical. To this day my friends will scream Simmonds throughout my house at the most inopportune moments.

I agree with your assessment that he could be very good and then go silent. I hope he can continue to improve to give the guys more chances to scare my neighbors.

I think Matt Read has a good shot at playing on the top line by midseason. I think his scoring potential is very high and he could surprise a lot of people this season with a breakout year. He isn't physical and his play in his own end needs improvement but I would not be surprised at all to see him take it to another level with his goal scoring.

Simmonds is always going to struggle to keep his weight up w/ his body type and that will effect his strength.

I remember at one point last year Simmonds was playing so well there was a lot of noise to trade Hartnell, as he was a cheaper version.

I love them both, they add character and grit to a team that has a bunch of small forwards.

I also remember listening to Boomer Gordon criticize the Talbot contract last summer,
"too much money for a grinder". Well this summer he admitted he made a mistake about Talbot's deal.

These guys are the type of forwards that a team needs to win championships.
I think the Schenn brothers have this in them too, warrior guys with some skill.

Too fricken bad Lappy still isn't playing, he is another one in that mold.

Really looking forward to this season.

Go Flyers.

he's listed at 6'2 and 183 pounds at 23 years of age. It would behoove him to put on about 15 pounds even if it isn't all muscle other wise he's gonna get shoved around like a rag doll the way he was against NJ. He's gotta hit the weights and at least improve his leg strength.
