Scoop Cooper: Nobody does it better than Doc!! Yet again Mike "Doc" Emrick showed tonight why he is the best PxP broadcaster in hockey broadcasting Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Eastern Conference Finals at MSG between the Rangers and Devils!

For over 20 years, us Devils fans were spoiled enough to call the Doc our own. Fortunately enough for me, I was able to grow up listening to Doc call every single Devil game I can remember. The day he decided to lighten the workload and work solely for NBC was a sad one, but understandable.

He is clearly the best in the bizz, and as a hockey fan it is a privilege to be able to hear him call hockey games.

I love Doc, but being a Kings fan, no one is better than Bob Miller. He deserves to see the Kings win the cup more than anyone.

Next to Doc, Bob is my very close second favorite and he has also been one of my best friends in hockey for even a little longer than Doc (since Bob joined the Kings in 1973).

I first knew and started working with Doc in 1977 when he joined the AHL Maine Mariners. By the way you will also be able to hear him this summer when he will again be calling water polo for NBC at the Summer Olympics in London.

It's gonna kill all King's fan if Brownie lifts the cup and we don't hear Bob's voice

In the past Bob has done late series Stanley Cup games on NHL Radio so you may be able to hear him there if he does the finals this year. If not, I'm sure he'll be doing something with Nick on the Kings' PxP of a finals on the radio or on whatever pre and post game TV programming done locally if the Kings win the Western Conference Finals.

You've told me some great stories about Doc, both personally and professionally. He is the voice of hockey in the United States just as Foster Hewitt once was the voice of hockey for Canada. He ranks up there with Foster, and Bob Cole, whom I dearly respect his ability to illustrate the impact and meaning of the game perfectly with his words, as the the best play by play guys of all time.

With that said, I can't help but to plug Grapes as one of the best broadcasters with those guys. As Scoop (and anyone who's read my blogs) know I consider him to be the most influential broadcaster since Foster.

I hope I get a chance to pick the minds of those who are still living about this game one day.

Great tribute to him, Scoop! Doc is arguably the greatest voice for this game -- and the best salesman for the hockey world. His incredible ability to relate to both the experienced, veteran fans and the casual, new fans, in the midst of the same sentence, is uncanny and something that cannot be taught.

Doc and Grapes do completely different things in hockey broadcasting so they both can be the "best" at what they do.

That is probably Doc's greatest ... and rarest ... skill and what makes him the very best at what he does. As usual, Alan, you went right to the heart of the matter.

Scoop, nice write up.
Doc gets a little "information" overload at times. But, is one of the best.

Emrick is definitely my favorite play by play hockey announcer! I remember being a little tike watching the Flyers in the late 80s and early 90s, listening to Doc and Bill Clement. Shame the team wasn't so good in those years, but Doc sure made it exciting! His knowledge of the game and people involved in it is unparalleled. Even now that the Flyers are done for the year and I won't get to hear Doc call anymore of their games, he makes watching two of the teams I despise the most, more than bearable!

I think it is pretty tough to call any single PBP guy "the best". But I have always enjoyed listening to 'Doc' call a game and he is certainly one of the best in the business.

If that is your biggest issue, your team has done pretty well.

And if Dustin Brown is handed the cup by Gary Bettman, there is not much that will kill Kings fans, unless they are smiling to death.

Doc Emrick is horrendous! His whiny calls will hopefully end soon, get Hughson in there or anyone that doesn't look like the cryptkeeper

Only thing that bothers me though (I could be wrong) but I thought he was wearing a Devils Stanley cup ring while announcing the game. Not really impartial there.

I worked often with Gene over a period of more then 25 years and I think you'll be pleased to learn that I am currently co-producing a feature length documentary film with Chris O'Brien of Green Creek Films on the life and time of Gene Hart to be called "Gene Hart:The Movie" which we hope to have out on DVD sometime in the Fall. It will include many in depth interviews with the likes of Gene's wife, Sara, his daughter Lauren, broadcasters Bobby Taylor, Terry Crisp, Sam Rosen, Merrill Reese, and many others who knew and/or worked with Gene.
