Adam Proteau: NHL player agents expecting surge in trades this summer With the NHL salary cap projected to rise just $3 million this summer – and even that figure has its caveats – free agency won't be a commonly-used road to change for most teams. But the pressure to win is as significant as ever, and that's why more than a few player agents are working under the assumption GMs will be very busy on the trade market.

I just hope that the Maple Leafs don't get careless and blow their cap money on a Steven Stamkos. The Leafs rebuild would be enhanced, but the cap ramifications, 3 to 4 years down the road would be horrendous. If Matthews, Marner and Nylander become top end talent, their entry level deals will end and they'll require a raise, that the Leafs may not be able to afford. Why pay Stamkos for past performances while with the Lightning? His numbers have trended down, the last 3 seasons, and is not worth max money, moving forward.

I expect that Murray will be quite busy fielding offers and making deals to get a couple of important RFA's signed - Lindholm & Rakell for sure not so confident on Sami V - who would be a very valuable trade chip as a young offensively skilled RH D man - plus the Freddie situation - so I expect a busy summer for Murray and the Ducks on the trade front -

I do agree with you, the Ducks will be looking to move a piece or two, and Tim Murray will be there to try and aquire Vatanen or Fowler. The Sabres have over $25 mil in cap space, and can also take on a contract needed to be moved.

Hope the Sabres are able to make some solid moves and start rising in the division.
