I'm really impressed with Tyson's reaction to his suspension. He showed a lot of maturity and acceptance. Obviously I don't know him, or if he actually is, but he seems like a good guy.

Roy made it sound like he was ready to give Gormley top 4 minutes right before the season started. Then he got scared last second. What changed in those 2 days that have made Roy scared to give him a chance?

He has done this every season that he has been here. First it was Barrie, refusing to play him off the start, sending him down, then showing that hes a gamer.

Redmond last year, and now Gormley. Roy just doesn't seem to have the best eye when evaluating pucking moving Dmen.

But every time once they get into the line up, they are difference makers and he can't take them out since they have more impact than his garbage pail triplets

The problem is, I don't think there is ANY truly effective group of defensemen the Avalanche CAN ice (at least not on the CURRENT roster).

Barrie being out definitely hurts but I don't think anybody would actually confuse Barrie with a "real" defensemen. He's that new breed of player we call a "puck-moving defenseman" (or rather, one half forward and one half defenseman).

Stuart is the TYPE of defenseman we need but he has lost a step or two and in today's fast-moving game he is a liability much of the time.

We obviously need to give everybody a chance and as much as I hate this saying, it really IS early in the year.

But the fact is, we've known all along the Avalanche eggs are Varly's basket (or whomever is in goal). If we don't get great goal tending, all this other talk is probably moot unless the offense can't catch fire and start scoring 5 or 6 goals a game (and we win a bunch of 6-5 games).

I sort of agree regarding the Early part so calm down, but w/ Stuart, Guenin, Holden...the Avs already know what they have in them, but they don't with Gormley yet and even with Zadorov by giving him credible partners. Play these guys in the best situation possible to see what you have in them. Those 3 are not going suddenly become stalwarts on the blue line.

I just get tired seeing those 3 being played in rolls that they have no business being near the roster, they really are 7th dmen. Not a whole 3rd pairing and make shift 2nd pairing guys that see PP time. Dont want to see another season slip by bc of stubbornness by coaching in playing dmen in rolls that don't suite them. Need to call a spade a spade and try and move on from them if there is any possible way

Oh, don't fret. I'm calm

As a matter of fact, and EVEN as mediocre as the Avs have been the past decade+, I can't really get TOO upset. When you look at Columbus or Edmonton... I mean, the Leafs haven't won a Cup since 1967.

1967! Think about that!

That's a WHOLE lot of years of misery. We are just BABY whiners compared to those fans

Barrie impressed but maybe sending him back is what motivated him to play better?
Redmond on the other hand was a waste of time. They should have kept Beniot over him.

He wasn't a waste of time, he was what he was. An ok 6th Dman with some offensive upside. Benoit I could agree with, I liked him.

But its the fact that as meh as Redmond was, he was a better Dman over Guenin, Holden, yet still got the short end of the stick.

Gormley is the same way, all during Pre-Season you could see how much more skill, skating ability, and just general overall ability he has over the Garbage Trio. I don't know why he can't get a shot yet. its a bit mind boggling

Oh yeah we aren't that hard done by. It always does feel like the real clock starts ticking next season once they get MacK and Barrie re-uped and have the ability to fill in holes with the ability to move/buy out Stuart, Holden, McLeod. Guenin, Cliche contracts up. Tanguay could be resigned at a reduced rate.

Lots of roster movement and able plug serious holes with the Avs own developed players or take a run at some UFAs like the rumoured Radulov.

Call me an ignorant slut, but I feel that Roy has a plan for this season and this isn't the finished product. The end goal may not even come this year, it may come next. But it just seems like he is waiting for certain things to happen. For instance, I think Grigo will be the third line center. I also think his ideal plan is to have Zadorov play with EJ and then move Beauchamin down with Berry. But he's waiting for something, maybe the players to learn the system, before he does this. Maybe there's an eventual trade involved.

I want to believe in that too, but I dunno the more analysis I see as Patrick as a coach playing this system, it doesn't seem like a good direction. Unless he changes his systems, Im don't see a quick turn around. Might just be more of the same what we saw last season and the start of this season. Unless some of these guys catch lightning in a bottle and the core guys carry the team into the playoffs with 2013 stat defiance

I gotta disagree with you on this one, Holden can play 3rd pairing minutes and be productive he is head & shoulders better than 5 &17(not saying a lot).
But Rick is correct in the idea that the Avs can't have both 5 & 17 in the lineup @ the same time. It's bad enough that one of them is on the ice every third shift , but having them both out there for regular shifts is a killer to any offensive production the Avs might produce.
And I much as I hate to defend Holden & Stuart on the first goal, they were in the correct positions , it was our Forwards that jacked up the coverage on Gaborik's goal.
But Gormley does have to be the logical option if either EJ or Barrie are out of the lineup, our Offense right now is too fragile to carry the dead weight that are Stuart & Guenin. GO AVS GO ...........

2 day break before Carolina at home. This is about as must win as you get this early in the season. If we don't find a way to get 2 points the crap is going to hit the fan.

Then another 2 day break to focus on Columbus who at the time might be winless and historically desperate.

Big week for the Avs, bounce back boys!
