A hockey player that snorts the occasional line? That's never been heard of before. |

Interesting note on the contract, I'm surprised there isn't a stipulation regarding gross misconduct on the part of the player voiding the contract.
He hasn't really been relevant in a while. |

I think we're lucky that nobody was hurt, based on the reports of how he was driving. He broke that law. Is that someone you want representing your brand? |

This is going to sound bad, but I'd say things change when the guy gets caught, arrested, and charged publicly. |

And he would be the first NHL player to do so?
Varlamov, Byfuglien... have all had charges against them yet are still on their team. We live in a real (frank)ed up world when we punish people harder for cocaine possession than physical abuse. |

Right or wrong, the charges against Varlamov were dropped. We haven't seen this Malone case through.
Further to that, how one team handles things like this versus another doesn't really impact my view. But it's just that... My view. You have yours. Neither is right or wrong. |

Disallow the team from the playoffs - T.O. should automatically take their place. |

This going public, in my opinion, is already a huge embarrassment and punishment. The guy is human and made a poor choice but treating him like some kind of rapist or murderer like you are suggesting is absurd.
"keeping him away from the team and locker room" Pffft...calm down Guy! |

If keeping him away from the locker room is how you'd treat a rapist or murderer, I've got a few concerns.
Point is that I don't think this is a guy you want around all the young players. You hope this is an isolated incident, and you move forward without him. |

Look at it this way. If you work in a professional office environment and get arrested and charged with cocaine possession, you're probably not going to be welcome around the office moving forward. |

Based on my reading, employment is at will. Of course, the NHL's unique CBA could throw a wrench in things. And I make my lack of knowledge on that subject clear in the blog.
EDIT - In a lot of cases you'll see an employee suspended without pay until the case is settled. Once again the CBA could make that option unavailable, but I'm not sure. Point being that the team really just has to hold on until it can use a buyout, which was likely going to be used on Malone anyways.

Quite honestly, I think his career was done after this year anyways. He's been bad.

and for sure we know he's not the only 1 that is using that substance...lots of cash allows these boys to play with whatever they choose. |

I know, right?
This whole story has just shown how hyperbolic people can be when it comes to casting judgement on someone they've never met but is marginally famous.
Getting arrested for cocaine and being a drug addict are two different things. |
