How has Chayka proven himself already?
What is that comment based on?

he has made some decent deals but they were easy ones to make really.

So to answer your question I don't know...

In the past year or so, the Coyotes have actually spent some money - they took on Chris Pronger, David Bolland and Pavel Datsyuk contracts in exchange for assets, and that should be a path they continue to go down this summer.

So, noncompetitive again in 2017-2018

For a 28 year old GM, he's managed to make some decent moves like the Datsyuk deal and is setting up the team well for the future, but, he does have a lot of work to do yet.

why are we discounting what he has done simply because he is young? regardless of age, he hasnt proved anything yet. is his roster remotely close to contending yet? that is the gauge of a good GM.

Chayka has done a great job in the year he's been GM. He got Chychrun for taking on a contract, a creative move that allowed him to pick a player who was as highly ranked as top three a year from the draft.

He got Lawson Crouse, a 2015 1st rounder for taking a contract.

He traded for DeAngleo, which looks like an astute pick up, more so because he took a "troubled" player at a discount.

Went off the board a bit to draft a small, skilled centre - whether or not it works out, I like the reasoning behind the pick as scouting/ draft rankings tend to overrate size and certain experiences and junior programs.

Traded a 35 year old goalie, got a prospect, a pick and saved $8 million.

A first for a perpetually injured Hanzal.

Even the Nick Cousins pick up was a smart gamble, Luke Schenn too, grabbing Holland, Burmistrov.

I think anyone would be hardpressed to find more than one or two GMs who where better over the last year.

Datsyuk deal wasn't a good one IMO. Took on the contract to move up 4 spots in the 1st round AND gave up a 2nd. I get it was helpful for the Yotes, but it was extremely helpful for Detroit at a minimal price. The Yotes had the leverage yet Wings didn't have to pay a premium.

Otherwise I would agree he has been more or less successful

Not discounting anything because he is young. I think it's simply pretty impressive what he's done with such little experience compared to some of the other GMs in the league.

Do you think it would have been better to have not made the trade? I don't think Arizona really cares how it affects Detroit. Teams don't make trades based on how much it helps the team.

Gotta agree with Tanner on this one, Chayka has done a great job. Only thing is that he should've gotten a 2nd or 3rd last year for Vrbata, but other than that he has done a great job.

If you give a guy the job to run a hockey team that is the worst in the league, and you add in several things that no other gm has to deal with (being young and having it talked about all the time, having Dave Tippett strangely kind or sort of in charge, changing owners, struggling market, arena issues, political issues with Glendale etc,) then I think judging him by where his team is in the standings a year later is unfair, ridiculous even.

IN five years, sure, judge him by his wins and accomplishments. But to take a last place team and rebuild it is probably going to take more than one season.

Fun Fact: If the Coyotes keep both their picks this year they'll have at least 2 first rounders from 2014,15,16 and 17 on roster.

Haha are you serious? The Chychrun pick up was super smart and definitely worth the second pick. Who cares about that Datsyuk contract the Coyotes have definitely a second pair D and probably a first pairing Dman. Detroit has Cholowski... I know which side in that deal I would chose.

Normally, I'd agree with the logic of what you're saying. But every situation is different and I think it's the player the Coyotes got that is all the difference.

Chychrun is a player who many thought was going to be a top pick, and who ended up being able to essentially step right into the NHL right after being drafted. He looked pretty good too.

Whether the injuries or attitude or whatever it was that caused him to drop end up costing him, on talent alone they picked up a top 3 pick, and the only cost was to take on some contract and spend money you have to spend anyways. (Cap Floor).

Sounds a lot like Paul Holmgren's first year as GM, except that he was able to actually take them from dead last in the league, clear out dead weight, add picks and prospects, and take them to the conference finals.

So far, Chayka has done well in clearing some dead space and acquiring young players, picks. How he utlizies them and tries to turn the Coyotes into a contender will reveal whether he's a great GM or not.

Again, the argument I am making is given the leverage the Yotes had, they could have done better. They moved up 4 spots (from 20 to 16), to acquire a negative value contract and give up a 2nd round pick. The regular cost to move up those 4 spots would probably cost a 3rd, especially considering we are talking mid to late teens in the 1st round, yet the cost for the Yotes was a 2nd.

What team has ever moved up 4 spots in the first round using only a 3rd as incentive? I don't even think a mid-round 2nd would be enough.

Not arguing that the pick wasn't the right one, he's a future stud from what I saw. And maybe given the situation the deal was made b/c it was Chychrun available at that spot. But in a vacuum trading 20 and 53 for 16 and Datsyuk is not good value. The Yotes were one of very few if any other teams who could take a $7.5M hit and see nothing on the roster for that hit

they also dumped vitale on the wings. saved them actual cash. for a team bleeding money, that's a win.

and the 53 + 20 is pretty much the exact cost to move up to 16.

If that's the player they targeted, and all they had to do was give up a late second and take back some money, I think it was a decent trade, personally.
