You'd really want Howard ? |

Yes, he only has two years left on his deal which is ideal for us or you guys as we both have young goalies in our systems we like. He was playing really well before he got hurt (which is a worry as it happens a lot ). And was also playing with one of the leagues worst d units. |

Sorry guys - I don't mean to hijack today's blog topic, but I posted the response below to the last Flames blog this morning just as this new one was posted. So in the interest of keeping the Nino discussion going for a bit - have a look at my comments below. Thoughts?
This is what you get from Nino!

Ok, you sold me on Nino - after watching that video highlight package I could see him really being a good fit with Monny & Gaudreau. I think the problem though is that Minnesota already has too many good players that they need to protect in the expansion draft, so if they choose to trade a valued roster player, they will only want picks and prospects back - ones that they don't have to use up a spot to protect. I really don't want to give up our first, but if we did, I would hope that we could convince them to take somebody else back - like Brouwer (please!). Also, by adding a 24 year old first line (we hope) player, and giving up an 18 year old first round prospect, plus another at least B+ prospect, what are the Flames actually saying? It looks like they would be "accelerating" the rebuild. Maybe the thought process needs to be "We want to take advantage of Giordano's best years before his window closes" - he is one of the best D in the league - why not go for it all while he is at, or close to, his best years. Food for thought. |

Calgary should just trade for Cory Schneider....he's just wasting away in New Jersey...and I think both teams match up well in a trade. |

I don't look at it as accelerating the rebuild ...they have a core of young guys already so why not add a player to help now while still being young enough to help long term too

What would Calgary fans think of Miller? Had an outstanding year in van, could be had for cheap on a 1 year deal. If im the flames id look to see how cheap howard would be from detroit. Having some nice young goalies in the system and trying to make the playoffs id look to get a couple vet starters.
Fleury would be nice but only if they are giving him away for a 2nd or so. Its nonsense that the penguins are in a position to make those demands. |

Ya, I'm not sure why this isn't something the media has thrown around. It seems to make sense from both sides. Don't follow NJD enough to know what their biggest need is. Probably scoring fwds? Any idea what it would take. My first thought would be 2017 1st + Mangiapane. Might not be enough though. |

I totally agree. Easily the best option for the flames
Flames are in the win now mode and in the future. He is a top 5 goalie and does nothing for the NJD while they are rebuilding. |

They need defense bad, I am assuming it would cost one of your top dmen prospects with a 1st.
After this draft they will be loaded with young centers for the future - zacha, mccelod nico/nolan. They have a nice goalie prospect in blackwood. |

I thought miller would be a good fit at 2 mill in a 1a 1b situation. I dont know why you wouldnt? Id be aiming for schnieder myself but if that didnt work out id aim for miller and another similar type to split duties maybe even elliot again, he was much better as the season went on. |

I think with the expansion there will be better options available. Schneider should be the #1 target though. If they want D, maybe 1st + Kulak, kylington, or rass. I'd be alright sending any one of the three. |

Pittsburgh is going to be asming way too much for Flower. I'm not sure why they'll be dealing from a position of power with the expansion draft and the risk of losibg Murray for nothing if they don't get a deal done, but they will be. I wouldn't be surprised if Pitts already had a deal on the shelf with Vegas to keep both after their playoff run ends, either. Bottom line is I think Fleury's cost to acquire is way too high.
Schneider makes a lot of sense and NJ and Calgary look like great trading partners. I'd probably do our 1st and T-Spoon for Schneider (which means we won't have either for the possible Nidorreiter trade but hey), since we are loaded on defense prospects right now and Jersey desperately needs some.
I still like the Raanta or Saros or Grubauer angles too, but it all depends what it might cost to bring them in.
Never been a fan of Miller's but if we can sign him for reasonably cheap for 1 or 2 years I'd consider it. Sounds like he wants to stay in Van and Van wants to keep him, though. I'd be completely fine with bringing Elliott back, though.
So yeah, we definitely have a lot of options, just a matter of finding the best one. |

Don't think our 1st & Tspoon will be enough. I think you are looking at a 1st, Kylington or Kulak & maybe a Shinkaruk. That fits Jersey's rebuild & gets us a goalie I feel can take us far in the playoffs. I would be down with this, don't know about Tre doing that. |

Minny isn't worried about losing Nino to expansion, they would expose Staal, they are more worried about losing a very good Dman. The problem with Nino is he is going to get a healthy raise from his 2.9mill. He has arbitration rights & had a monster year. He will want 5.0-5.5 mill on a 5-6 year deal & probably worth doing that contract on a 24 year old. But Minny are already flirting the cap & they have Granlund to resign & his deal is probably going to be in the Mony, Gaudreau, Mckinnon, Barkov territory. Minny have cap problems. They also don't have a 1st or 2nd this year, so that #16 will have some extra value to them. They will never take Brouwer back in a deal, that would make no sense when they already have their own overpaid older players. |
