B. schenn was a #5 first rd pick. He's worth two late 1st rd picks himself.

Thanks so was L schenn.

Gotta believe that ownership will choose to not financially cripple themselves and just try to rebuild without Shea Weber and Suter. They have two potential stars on their blueline in Ellis and Josi.

They could go get a bridge guy like Jay Bouwmeester to help keep them afloat.

- bradleyc4

I never seen one player win the Stanley Cup. Weber helps your odds of doing that but its not guaranteed. The Preds arent the Flyers who can take huge risks like offering this contract.

It doesn't make sense to trade Couturier, Schenns or Coburn to get Weber when all the flyers have to do is sit back with a hardcore poker face and force nash to make the next move.
There is no reason for the flyers to deal very good young players when they don't have to. Obviously Poille wanted more than PH was willing to give so I say take what we are willing to give or match the OS. If the Flyers don't get Weber I give them big props for trying.

agree with this whole post -- I like our team the way it is -- with Weber, I freaking love our team.....but, I'm happy that our team goes balls to the wall.

A while back when the Parise / Suter show was going on, someone on this board posted something like.

"The greatest trick the Devil ever played, was convincing the world he didn't exist."

Enter Weber.

And then had his picture.

That was awesome and so true.

It could be the best offer available. I just keep my options open.
- stveshdy

Problem is, you don't know the other options until you refuse the Nashville one.
Unless of course, you already have an agreed upon offer on the table that is contingent upon Nashville not matching.

I'm just hoping that Philly screws themselves enough with the Cap that in 2 years my team can sign Giroux to a nice big $8-10 million offer sheet.

I think Weber was his #1 target. I think he was fairly certain Parise wasn't going to leave NJ and go to an Atlantic Division rival and Suter's camp said he wasn't interested in the EC. I think Homer made those offers to drive up the price of other teams.

From what i get their ownership is ver conservative with money. The main reason the situation is at this point.
- Philly1980

Let's hope they stay that way

Nasville has been a wining team for quite a few years now and they are still losing millions of dollars. If it werent for millions of tax payer money to keep them afloat they would be bankrupt right now.
- Philly1980

Absolutely, so why would they invest so heavily in one guy?
Now, he is great. And the fans love him. But if they can accomplish nearly the same thing and spend less money doing it, why wouldn't the investors want to do that?

no way -- that was spot on. if they landed either/both then awesome...if they didn't...then they did what they did -- throw an offer at weber.

The Flyers will match any offer and trade others to fit him in if they even allow him to get to that point.

Not counting Weber the preds have 2 RFAs this year and 7 next year. Going to be some nice pay increases to keep their young players. They do have 5 UFAs nexy year, but with Weber or (Voracek and Mz) I think they'll blow right through the cap floor next year, especially if it comes back down.

Any reason A. Kostitsyn not signed by anyone yet?

I personally think this offersheet was planed. For nashville to be able to say listen we cant offer that kind of money...they have their out. Theyll have 8 first round draft picks to build with in 4 years...Cheap quality players. with the New CBA hitting next year they wont have to worry about loosing any of them till there 30..Cheap Entry level contracts for five years...Makes sense if you ask me.

how are they going to pay him 27 million when they don't even bring in that much in ticket sales?
- flyersfan51

Ticket sales is far from the only source of cash flow for an NHL team.

So Weber is the only way to get that accomplished? I just don't understand the "save face" sentiment. Homer tried to get trades accomplished. He tried. Poile put himself in a bad spot.. and Homer capitalized on him...

That's how I see it, too. It's possible the don't match and agree to a trade with the Flyers, or another team, for the assets that they get from the Flyers.

Or they match and hope they can manage to finance the Weber and Rinne deals and build a winning team around them.

That's the bottom line, biggest asset or not, if the team doesn't win they won't draw fans and be viable. Does having Weber and Rinne and the inability to pay a supporting cast achieve that?

I wouldn't be amazed at any of the scenarios. I'm not saying that it's a sure thing they don't match, just that it's a tough money decision.

- Jsaquella

I had thought about that. Perhaps they take the pics and trade them for other players(maybe Nash if he were willing, but probably not with Weber gone, maybe Bobby Ryan). I still don't see Weber a Flyer. I believe by next week we will have Ryan and re-signed Jake. Plus, if we make a trade with them, where will our offense come from? We won't have anything of real value to trade without crippling another area.

i don't think we will lose him. someone said we had 12 mil still in cap space. so 7.8 for Weber and give jake a 5/17.5 deal.

This.

Poile needs to accept rebuilding IMO, which means he should try and squeeze whatever he can out of Homer in a decline and trade transaction.

He has the foundation for a superb future defense with Ellis, Josi, and Blum. Add some pieces and picks around them and move on without crippling the organization financially, but no way do I let him go strcitly for 4 late 1sts. They need to pull off a trade.

for Nashville its:

Taxpayer Money,
Revenue Sharing,
Their tv market is 28th with 1 million HH....some would say the tv rating at it highest was a "1"...

Maybe if they let weber work the streets they could make some of it up.

Agree completely.
And, with all those picks, they can deal half of them for whatever they feel makes them better.
I don't think it will take long for them to recover from this if they don't match.
Where they blew it was by not trading suter's rights

yes -- Oshie signed 5/20.875.

GP 262 Goals 63 Assists 112 Points 175

Voracek

GP 319 Goals 57 Assists 126 Points 183

both players are comparable.....so I guess they need to give Jake 4 a year...but I'd still sign him.

I don't think the Pred will match but I think this deal will turn out really bad for the Flyers long term. Weber is one player, he is not a team. Teams win cups and this puts the Flyers in the same position they were in a couple years ago when they got Pronger. They MUST win the cup or it is a failure. That's a lot of pressure especially with the demands the fans put on this team.
- The Hip

people keep saying "oh man, but think of the FUTURE!!! 4 First rounders! They really screwed themselves with Pronger trade too! We should stockpile and rebuild! Oh man!"

seriously, this team has missed the playoffs once in what...like 15 years? Even without Weber, you don't think this team is Playoff caliber that has a chance to win it all? Grant it, moves like the Pronger deal and this Weber deal are Stanley Cup moves, and the first year with Pronger where did the Flyers end up? The SCF. Sure, was it a disappointment when they didn't win it all? of course! but 28 other teams didn't win it that year as well.

The Flyers brass have done a great job being creative with their prospects and utilizing guys like Matt Reed, as well as the 4 under 23 y/o players they got for MIke Richards and Jeff Carter.

I don't mind this move from a Flyers standpoint for present OR future. This ownership group wants ONE THING, and that's a Stanley Cup. We're just going to have to live with that i guess.
