Just weighing in on this a bit. First of all, to anyone suggesting that we trade MAB, Read and 2 firsts (just as an example), you have to understand that the players being swapped in place of the picks have to be at least worthly of a #20-25 pick in the draft. Otherwise, the pick is more valuable to Nashville, even a pick a couple of years away.

Is MAB worth a #1. Absolutely not. Read probably isn't yet because he was undrafted, will be 27 (or maybe even 28!) before next season starts, and may not repeat the success of his rookie year. Read PLUS MAB may be worthy of a #1 to some, maybe not to all gms.

Vorachek, Meszaros, Schenn, Couturier, Schenn, Laughton, Coburn, Giroux - these are the guys that are worthy of a 1st round pick (or more in some cases).

Now, for those thinking Holmgren has Poile over the barrel on this, I disagree. Holmgren/Snider are no longer involved with Weber, they are committed. Know the difference between involvement and committment? Well, in a Ham and Egg breakfast, the chicken's involved but the pig is committed.

Think of the last time Snider put pressure on Holmgren to bring in a specific player. Don't have to think too far back - it was Bryz. And we not only way overpaid Phoenix for the player's rights, we way way overpaid Bryz. Like the Royal Mounties, Holmgren gets his man. But sometimes at a premium.

I can easily see Holmgren/Snider blinking first and doing more than you guys are suggesting to ensure they end up with Weber.

schenn bros was my first impression yesterday

Under no circumstances do you trade the Schenn brothers, let alone anyone else. The Flyers made their move, now it's time for Nashville to pick their poison. You want to bankrupt you business go ahead. Or you can let him go to a team he wants to play for now.

Well, it was widely reported that multiple teams (NY, DET, VAN, SJ, PHI) were in trade talks with Nashville.

While it may not mean Poile, it seems to indicate that he was more than willing to trade Weber for the right deal. With upwards of 5 teams in the mix, that's tantamount to "shopping" him imo. Yahoo hockey blogger, "Puck Daddy" seemed to infer this as well:

"Is it worth retaining a player that, based on the Predators shopping him , may have indicated his time with the franchise is at an end; and could Nashville match the financial terms of the deal?"

The number of teams involved doesn't in any way indicate that the Preds were shopping Weber. All 5 of those teams could have been the instigator of the conversations about Weber. Neither does the language used in a blog indicate that the Preds were shopping Weber. When your having trouble signing a top player to a contract, you answer the phone. A good GM listens to what any other GM has to say. None of that indicates that the Preds were shopping Weber.

It would be in the Flyers best interests to make a reasonable deal to get Weber. I would not include B Schenn, or Couturier in that reasonable deal.

Btw, guess this puts to bed the whole notion that no big name players will want to play in Philadelphia because Homer trades them right when their new contract kicks in. And Weber does not have a NMC. Just sayin.

Flyers 80%
Preds 20%

Flyers offer sheet is humongous and the Preds are not a big enough market to match IMO. Stand pat Homer. Dont blink.

No its because of Bryz, not Homer trading people.

I just seem to remember a 12 page debate with some experts that Bryzgalov could deter players, namely Weber, from coming here.

Yes, I will confess that I was part of the discussion, specifically a round or two with you Joe. I was kinda defending someone elses argument, but I did agree.

So I will humbly eat crow and repent the error of my ways . I'm quite happy to be wrong on this!!!

PS: I never profess to be an expert tho, so I will slightly take issue with that comment.

You've offered some very strong insight lately. Especially with regards to the CBA negotiations.

Thanks MJL!! I appreciate it. The funny thing is that when I first started posting on here a while back you and I tended to disagree.

The reality is that many of you guys know more than me about many aspects of the game because a lot of you played it. And unfortunately I don't have as much time as I'd like to watch other teams and or even post on here, tho I lurk almost every day. So between Bill and many of you guys, especially you and JSaq and a few others, my knowledge of the game, the CBA and especially players from other teams is much much stronger than a while back. That's probably why we're agreeing more

OK, no more gratituous butt kissing. Back to All Day All Shea!

That would be me, and I was wrong. I was saying goalie play would be a factor in a players decision making. I take it Weber has no problem with Bryz. I have no problem with Bryz either.

Again, that's just a term that was used.

Edit: Just looked through Dreger's tweets for the last 3 days. I didn't see a Tweet from Dreger saying that Nashville was shopping Weber.

That's what makes this place fun. I love a good debate, never take it personal, am willing to admit when I'm wrong and try not to gloat (too much) on the rare occasions I'm right, and mostly try to learn more about hockey and show my support for the Flyers!!!

On a separate and sadder note, I'm in Denver today and stayed in a hotel a few miles from Aurora last night. It really is kinda sad here. My thoughts go out to the victims and their families, and the folks in Denver in general.

agreed
which is why the "get me out of here" campaign his agents are on is tough to figure out

- Crimsoninja

I don't think he necessarily is comfortable staying in Nashville. I think he truly believes they wouldn't match. But it's a combination of factors. First this "he will play anywhere notion" isn't true. He didn't want to play for the Rangers, his agent stated that. And I don't think Poile was trading him to the Wings. What I feel happened is when he visited the Flyers, they pulled out all the stops and he decided he wanted to play here. His agent instructed Nashville to get a deal done with the Flyers (at all cost POSSIBLE; doesn't mean it would happen) and when the Flyers and Preds couldn't agree the offer sheet came. Weber signed it because he wants out and if his agent keeps telling the world he wants out, as well as how front loaded the money was there is a really good chance he will get out of Nashville. Lastly, factor in the new CBA and Poile's propensity (for whatever reason; management etc.) to drag his feet this was his only option. I truly do believe he wants out and will tell the Preds so, if not already.

PS- This is all speculation so it doesn't need to be torn apart as fact.

Has he directly stated that he doesn't want to play in Nashville? Or has he just said he wants to play in Philly? Maybe that's semantics, but I think there is a distinction there. If he didn't want to play in Nashville, why sign an Offer Sheet where the possible outcome is that he is a Predator for 14 years?
- MJL

from what i heard, he said he "wants to move on"

at least that's what his agent said
