I wonder if he likes poker? He is the epitome of a gambling GM. Takes big risks, keep his hand close, and jumps when he feels he has someone beat.
- jak521

You got it! Unlike Clarke, who also made plenty of big moves, Homer has a much better grasp on the value of youth.

ultimately all this talk is for nothing....if a player wants to move on from a team, no matter how good he is they move him...Weber will be a flyer all this waiting from nashville is to try to increase the value of the players they get back...its hard to convince 6 people to eat up that contract for a player who doesn't want to be there. Remember Lindros everyone???What did the flyers get for him....Jack poop.

I also expect Webers agent to turn up the nastiness in the coming days via the press to further help push his client out of Nashville.

the flyers will still be strong at the center position with Giroux, Coots , Briere and Laughton
- vejim

Laughton won't sniff NHL ice for a bit

if they get rid of Schenn, i COULD see them going after Arnott or another offensively capable center

i don't. i'm saying either they can afford him or they can't. if they can't, they won't take a fiscal bath just because the flyers won't give up a schenn or coots.
- OrangeBlack27

but if they can... but would rather not lose the 26 mil and then have to trade him next year because he wants out... wouldnt you try to pry him out now if you were Holmer?

edit: ok i dont think this makes sense

I can see Poile coming out saying "Ha!, bluffed you the whole time"

Thatll ignite the fanbase

- aosplayo

Poile was never bluffing. He was only doing what any good GM would do under the circumstances when it came to their franchise player and that is announce to the hockey world that they aren't going to lie down if an offer sheet is signed.

Nash knew they were vulnerable to a front end loaded offer like the one Homer dropped on them but hoped no one would put it together. That's just part and parcel to a small market team trying to survive in any sport. Now that one is on the table, Nash's brass has a hard decision to make - take a possibly devastating financial hit or a huge PR hit which would also have financial implications -and it's going to take a little time.

so you feel they are bluffing?
- Crimsoninja

Feel Nashville is bluffing? Possibly. If Nashville has made a decision not to match, then I would bluff and try to make a deal. I'm sure the League is pushing that behind the scenes also.

who thought Coots would make the team?
- vejim

coots' pedigree was much higher. at one point, he was considered a candidate for first overall. many saw Laughton as a borderline 1st rnder, more like an early 2nd.

Poile is taking a lot of criticism here, and I'm not sure that it's warranted. He's been in a gun fight with a water pistol. He's at a poker table with a short stack. the big stack always bullies the short stack. Even if he's an equal player to his opponent.

Its a risky bluff though, especially since Homer is dealing from the position of strength.
They can walk away, leaving nashville to foot a very heavy bill.

I consider that no difference....esp if its not breaking any rules now
- Just5

It's certainly a difference. But in terms of what the difficulty is for Nashville to match. That difference isn't really a factor.

I doubt you'll see that. Those feelings have been made known. Nothing to gain by pushing that further.
