I agree the 'Hawks don't make a move for Lack just for the sake of screwing with the 'Nucks. It doesn't put the Nucks in that big of a pickle to be worth it.

On the other hand, if the Hawks did end up with Lack .. they're stuck in a similar position with 3 goalies one 1 way contracts.

Although I like Lack and have seen him play (plus his .925 save% in two years in the AHL is promising).. is he clearly that much better than Emery or Craw? And is he worth sitting in the NHL instead of developing more in the AHL?

Would be kind of like the '06 Hawks starting with too many goalies again...

Another question is would he be a better back-up / CC challenger to start the season than Razor?

I don't know if SB & Co. thinks he'd be ready to pull the load should CC fail and Razor let go. That's why I don't think they'd pull the trigger on an OS, even if they did the 2nd round pick back from Chevy in WPG.

The thinking behind the Lack stuff I can understand but ...

Does anyone really think Bowman is going to pay an unproven goalie more money than Crawford???

Nope - per Capgeek, Emery has a two way that pays him the same in the NHL or the AHL.

No, but he might be able to get him for a dollar less than Emery.

If Crawford fails we need a veteran to step in and take the reins, that's where Emery comes in. Given the uncertainty of Crawford's future I wouldn't want an inexperienced rookie to back him up. I seem to remember a lot of fans wanting Emery to start last season. Worst case scenario is that Crawford fails and Emery starts, but if Lack was the back-up would we feel comfortable in him being the starter?

Huh? Where do you see that? Is there a footnote or something? The only thing a 2-way contract means is that his pay is different in AHL and NHL...

edit: He's not color coded as two way on the Hawks page:

I would. He seems to have that Niemi kind of profile. Played well in a top Euro league, caught on quickly in the AHL, and is incredibly athletic. He also fits the modern profile of taller and bigger goalies which the Hawks really lack in their depth chart.

Emery is well past his prime and just lacks the lateral movement he used to have.

By definition a one way contract pays the player his same NHL salary in the AHL.

Emery has a one way contract.

And a one-way hip.

He really has trouble going side to side: hard for him to start his glide, hard for him to stop it.

He signed a one year extension of his original two way deal.

Or I'm an idiot...

Even if it's one way, three goalies for $5.5MM is still not a bad position to be in.

Not saying you're an idiot. He signed a new contract for 1 year under different terms than his original contract. So it's not like they just extended his existing deal 1 year. Actually, his '11-'12 contract was a 1 way deal anyway. Looks like only his '10-'11 was 2-way.

As Al noted, by definition, a contract that pays the same in AHL/NHL is a 1-way deal.
