Whether or not it's against the "code", Polie has had plenty of time to get something done and he knew the risks.

This might be exactly what they want. Evidently money is their issue. Now they get that massive salary off their backs for a while, and plenty of picks to restock the stable. With the way they draft defensemen I say they are back into contention within five years maybe sooner.

Well if those numbers are true then I don't see how Nashville doesn't match. It was thought he would make more than that per year, I guess it will come down to years.

The more I look at that though I think Holmgren should have gone higher to make it near impossible for Nashville to match. Holmgren just made an enemy, and he might not end up with his guy.

- canadianpenfan

They might've really frontloaded the deal to make it so Nashville just doens't have the cash for it.

And Holmer can keep taking them from Nashville. Always thought Nashville would be better as a Flyers farm system. Flyers draft forwards great, suck at goalies and D. Which is what the Preds are only good at.

Well, Homer could have warned him he would do this. Dreger said numerous deadlines were passed.

I see. I didn't see the tweets myself.

Holmgren could have jammed $50mm into the first 3 years and made it impossible to match.

Honestly too stunned to think deeply. It's gonna be a fun 7 days

It will be interesting to hear how it's structured.

When a team "matches", does it have to be the exact same offer or just years/total money? I'm guessing the former...

That's really the only way it makes sense to me. There's going to be some sweet quotes coming out this week.

There's two possible ways Nashville may decide not to match. First is the number of years. Now, that I'm not sold on, because they reportedly offered Suter 13 years.

However, if the Flyers front loaded the poop out of this sheet, Nashville may simply not be able to afford it. What if the Flyers toss in a ridiculously high signing bonus? Or give Weber a massive salary on top of a huge bonus?

- Jsaquella

I would completely agree with you... IF they had signed Suter... but they haven't... and theres no way this organization can afford to lose both Suter and Weber for a few draft picks.

Maybe if it is like a crazy dollar amount for the 1st year.. than MAYBE.. but more likely if they did have a signing bonus it would be spread out 2-3 years... even a wealthy organization like Philly doesn't want to pay out like 30 million on 1 player the first year.

Paul Holmgren: David Poille is the biggest wussy in the league. We did what he was afraid to do.

Holmgren slams his glass of milk down and throws an apple at Pannotchio's head and then walks out of the room, middle fingers raised high.

so does this signal that he definitely wants out of nashville? if so, wouldnt it be odd to match and sign a player for 14 years if he doesnt want to be there? or is it more likely he's saying philly or nash, im good with either..

strange situation

Its going to be fascinating to see financial terms of Weber's offer sheet. Hearing in one calendar year, he could make $26 mil.

I don't know how you sell the team to the fans if he leaves.

26 mill in one year! I might not be able to sleep tonight b/c there's no way Nash is matching that cheddar.

Exactly... unless Carrie Underwood plans on being at the games naked.. I expect many seats will be empty.

On that note... I really hope Carrie Underwood shows up at games naked!

Philly may not be happy to pay it, but they have a 77 year old owner that wants to win a Stanley Cup now. They have the massive financial backing of Comcast-Universal NBC. According to Dreger, the Flyers can offer as much as $51mm in the first two years.

The breakdown in terms of dollars in the first few years is probably the crux of the matter.

So, they've effectively given up on the return of Pronger, I would guess.

It may well be a case of seeing the initial NHL offer in the CBA and knowing that he can be set for life now, with a massive deal AND get paid during a potential lockout
