This building has been plenty engaged when warranted in playoffs and regular season. Crowd has changed.

I think a big problem is that Flyers fans used to be different than all the other philly sports fans.. Now, it seems as though the same idiots that boo the eagles and phillies are at flyers games booing them.

I remember when it would be dead quiet because everyone was so focused on the game... and then you would hear a "Lets go FLYers!" chant start.. and the whole place would be in on it..

- jak521

are you saying Philly fans are more refined?

well you can throw Phillies fans into that mix too...
- phi1671

I don't enjoy going to Phils games in the new ballpark because no one seems like they're there to watch the game. And when you do hear someone talking about the game, they have no idea what they're talking about.

Well, they can't build arenas out of nostalgia so I think you're doomed to disappointment.

[quote=phi1671]the seating is the main difference between the two buildings. they wanted to be able to seat more people so they had to "flatten" the lower bowl compared to the spectrum where the players have said it felt like the fans were on top of them.

Yes and no.
Part of the problem is the lighting. In the current building, the fans are lit also. The stands are very bright. At the Spectrum, only the lights above the ice were lit while the game was played. Yes, the angles were a touch steeper but the primary reason for the appearance of the wall of people was that the seating area was relatively dark. Watch old games from Boston Garden, Maple Leaf Gardens vs. the Spectrum and MSG and you'll see what I mean. Some of the current arenas do try to emulate the Spectrum style of lighting, most notably Air Canada and the Caps arena. I prefer that lighting system better than the overly bright WF Center.

Oh..once again I need to vent on the "Let's Go Flyers" cadence. They should get Schultz, Propp and others to do an instructional video to be shown during games. I'm sure that Game 6 in '87 would have a good 3 minute example.

I had hoped that someone understood my Darren "Hair Club for Men" Jensen reference to his 48 save shut-out.

It does and all these guys saying it goes bonkers never saw a game in the old place. A regular season game there was like a conference finals here.

1) Darren Jensen actually was a spokesperson for the company and appeared in their TV commercials in the late 80's;

2) I remember seeing Chico Resch with hair when he came up with Isles in 74-75. However, I had the 74-75 Sporting News Hockey Guide (Bernie was on the cover) and as you delve further in, it had minor league stats (AHL, CHL and the ones below those). For the top leagues (AHL and CHL were the same level), they had little photos (head shots) of the post-season 1st and 2nd team all-stars. Chico was an all-star (and league MVP for Fort Worth in 73-74) in the CHL and he is bald. My first reaction was, "Hey????!!!"

3) I was eight when I saw Ross Lonsberry in a fight on the road shortly after the trade with the Kings and his helmet came off. He didn't wear his piece under the helmet. I had only seen pictures of him in programs and hockey cards, which all showed him with hair. I remember yelling to my Dad, "Oh my God, his hair got ripped off his head!"
