All is good.

Thanks mostly to the stronger dollar, Canada’s seven franchises have a combined profit of $169-million. Despite a couple of financial powerhouses in the Rangers and Red Wings, the 23 American teams combine to lose $42.5-million.

If the Canadian dollar plummets, watch these Canadian teams run into trouble.

Especially since Leafs and Habs count for 123M of these 169M of profits

But if those 7 teams are producing the majority of the revenue....then if the dollar drops so does the revenue, which pulls the cap down.
It's all tied to revenue.

exactly.
Anyway as I said, lower the cap floor a bit to help out the lower teams. Maybe cut back the revenues percentages back a little (1 or 2 points) and carry on.

Really no need to reinvent the wheel.

- stormeyAlterEgo

I don't think you can widen the gap between the cap and the floor. If they do that they would have to raise the floor and cap at different growth rates in order to maintain the player revenue percentage.

Then after a few years the gap will be as wide as it was in the old days when NYR, TOR et al could spend whatever they wanted for players.

Not sure they are going to change the way they negotiate with Subban based on an absurd "proposal" by the owners.
- Pecafan Fan

I don't think that the owners offer is absurd. The NHL has teams (owners) that are losing a lot of money every year yet the players get their pay cheques, don't they? Why should the owners continue to lose money while the players make more and more? Although I agree that the offer needs to be tweaked a bit in all fairness, I think it is closer to being fair than what they have got in place now. With a extremely tight economy looming, the new C.B.A. has to be fair or we may not have an NHL to watch.

Don't widen the gap just shift it.
Instead of the floor being 5 down from the revenue figure and 5 up go 8 down and 2 up.
This is one of the NHL demands

The owner of the Minnesota Wild was one of those owners who used to cry because he was bleeding money... And look at the deals he gave to Parise and Suter.

So either the owners/gms are full of poop or the players have a LOT of power in this league...

Rubbish. For a league that has been saying this forever they seem to keep chugging along.
- habby

really? you think the Coyotes are making money? you think the Thrashers were making money? you think teams like Florida, New Jersey, NYI are making money? their gate receipts are poop. i can't imagine they get much for local TV/radio right or ad revenue. those are all big markets too. i don't even know if they qualify for revenue sharing and even if they did, it's pathetic that markets like that have to eat into profitable teams in places like Edmonton. im not sayin the CBA can fix that because those are poop hockey markets with the exception of LI maybe. but i don't think it's rubbish that teams are losing money.

I went to Tampa a few years back at it cost me 50$ for 2 good tickets and parking.

50$ in Montreal won't even get you 1 beer.

The owners need to take some responsibility for their actions.

Also, accepting that would bump the NHL union up the worst unions in existence list along ways.
