i disagree. we just lost 2 big forwards and briere and roo are very small.

Teams like the Rangers Bruins and Kings have been very unsuccessful carrying several bigger forwards.

We should stay small.

Great blog, Bill.

Arnott is a very intriguing idea. I'd love add his locker room presence and wisdom to the team.

Here would be projected lines:

Hartsy-G-Briere
Schenn-Arnott-Voracek
Simmonds-Couturier-Read
Fedotenko-Rinaldo/Talbot-Rinaldo/Talbot

Or Arnott could always slide into a 4th line center role.

arnott is average at the dot and langkow is pretty terrible.

Don't we have a tradition of terrible face-off guys - since Primeau. What Langkow loses at the dot, he makes up for with his 2-way play.

Well played. Also, I like the return to the stylized short form signature, the full 'Gentleman' was too formal for this establishment.

Let's not forget that Couturier and Giroux are very good at the dot.

Alex Semin is still unsigned and there's an opening on the top line.

Is there any way we can roid up Coots and Simmonds? This could solve some of our issues.

I think a quick phone call to any NY Yankees player (current or ex) could get you the supply you need.

My preference if we went that route..

My lines would look like this..

Hartsy-G-Voracek
Simmonds-Briere-Read
Talbot-Couts-Schenn
Rusty-Arnott-Rinaldo/Wellwood/Sestito

I think that "3rd" line would be absolutely beautiful

tough to tell. he was great in a 2-way role in calgary, but missed almost all of 10-11 and didn't do much of the heavy lifting defensively this year for phx amongst their forwards.

Giroux was at a respectable 53.7% at the dot last year. The two seasons prior he was right at or just under 50%. Couturier was at 47 % last year. The only guy who regularly played center last year who was above 50% was Giroux.

Bill,

Thanks so much for the write-up on Briere. I couldn’t agree more. I know that he gets a lot of flak from fans but I started watching the Flyers because of him. His regular season wasn’t the greatest this year but anyone who can ramp it up in the play-offs is well worth the money. He is one of my favorite players and it’s nice to see him get some recognition as well as an honest critique of his flaws.

I like what your suggesting. Quick question do you feel that Read and Simmonds would be better of being on the third line? I don't feel that those guys are second line players. Both had great seasons last year but not sure if they should be top 6 players, just my opinion, curious to what others think.

It's nice to know that after a week of vacation and no TV or internet including use of my blackberry that the flyers have not sold their team for Weber.
Saw the rumor of the Doan offer and thought it was excessive.
I would like to see the flyers offer Semin a 2 year deal 6mil.
Arnott could work as a vet to help teach the young ins.

Didn't get the Tweet from Eskin, so I would assume no.

But we'll keep proposing it here over and over.

The way I see it, Lava has never used traditional 1-2-3-4 line systems. Instead he tries to match-up or play hot lines.

Situational lines are how I see it. We have a true 1st line because of G. But after that we have the Briere line I listed with a combination of speed, size, creativity. physicality and grit. Read has blazing speed and can play gritty two way hockey. He knows how to find the open net and gets himself into good positions. Briere is the creative guy in the group who does his best work from behind and around the net. Simmonds is the jammer physical net presence.

With the "3rd line" we have our best defensive line... hands down. Those guys are all capable of putting up at least 15 goals a piece, while playing in a defensive role against other teams top forwards.. This line would virtually end up playing second line minutes, but are looked at historically as the third line because of their checking status.
