I said in another thread, he's never going to be as tough or physical as David Krejci, but could have a similar top end offensive output on a good team.

He's never going to be as fast as Stephen Weiss, but has similar smarts and heart.

He's probably going to be like a slightly better David Legwand in terms of production. If he sticks with the Oilers, I think he'll end up netting 50-60 points and not specifically being a liability.

- Morris

David Legwand is a pretty good comp. Hope he doesn't stay as poor on the draws as DL though

Turris and Gagner arent even in the same class bud. Gags is 10 times the player.
- Oilfan19

I disagree. I think they're very similar.

Me too. Spats has yet to explain to me how Turris is a stud and Gags is a laughing stock. They are both underachievers with glimpses of improvement.

Dude the eighth overall pick trade talk was echoed by Jeff Marek who is no slouch in the hockey media. He said the 'canes had specific interest in Gagner. Now, I'm not sure if he was full of it or what but it was out there...

Indeed, we have to use references and compare player stats to stats but all of a sudden the Bozak/ Gagner comparison exists in some vacuum. Who knows, if the rumor was true maybe they still like Gagner's upside as a young player.

- Salvo

I said in another post that I brought up Bozak cause they are similar in stature and had similar point totals.
While I KNOW that Gagner has more value than Bozak, if I said that Bozak was worth a 1st round pick (even in the 20's) I would be laughed off the board...that is all I was saying...

And I would tend to agree...I also feel that SG is more of a complimentary piece, whereas if he has good wingers (as it looks like he will this year) he could put up 20G's 60P's...

I like Gagner. I don't understand why so many people in Oiler nation are always so anxious to trade him.

Love Turris, great fit behind Spezza. I think a large part of the credit for the Senators run to the playoffs last year has to be given to the addition of Turris. You saw their team play improve from his first game forward. Also thought he was very strong in playoffs.

Eggsactly. If there was ever an offer I bet it was Tambo saying no way. Has as much to do with the make-up of our team right now as value for value talk.
- Salvo

I find it hard to believe that Tambo would have turned down the 8th overall pick if it was on the table...
You could have grabbed a centre to replace Gagner in Grigorenko, or another forward who some argue is closest to NHL reayd in Forsberg or grab a dman as Trouba and Ceci were on the board...
Or flip the 8th overall along with your 2nd rounder for the 6th/7th and got Dumba...

Yeah but Tambi fell asleep on his way back to the table after taking yakupov. Didnt wake up until the beginning of the 3rd round.

It would be too depressing to be an Oilers fan if I didn't believe that you could build a quality top 6 around wingers as key pieces. Obviously we're confident with Hall, Ebs, Yaks and Paajarvi/Hemsky as top 6 wingers we won't necessarily need world-beating centres.

very similar type of player too. Gagner a little more offensive, Turris a little more two way. But Gagner added a little two way play to his game this year (offense suffered though, I don't care what the stats say, he's never going to have another 8 point game), and Turris added a little more offense.

Turris seemed to benefit from a change of scenery, Gagner might as well.

Well Gagner isn't particularly big or physical or fast, and he doesn't have a particularly great shot. He's really touted for his smarts though. A) I think those take a long time to develop and B) hockey sense as a quality is not easily gleaned from casual viewing, perusing stats or as seperate from some of the other skills. I think Gagner has been slow to add tools to his belt (I wouldn't have guessed after his rookie year, but in retrospect it seems as though he was rushed). But I also think a lot of hockey fans are short-sighted. Combine that with the new fashion that every team needs to have five top 6 centres to be successful, you get everyone trying to move Gagner.

Ya, and that's ridiculous. Depending on any team's direction at the time - Bozak is easily worth a pick in the twenties---mitigating factors in every deal and the draft floor trade market is frankly it's own frenzy despite what a bunch of media teams, bloggers and posters babble on about.

I mean even at the eight spot - if the 'canes were in get better immediately at all costs-mode that may have trumped all potential of a mature D-man five years down the road.
