Washington must have really hated Mike Green too. He turned down their QO and just re-signed a great deal for both sides.

For a late 5th round draft pick, im pretty content with his play for what 10 min of ice a game. He's not the average banger......he has some skill.....no much but some. Come playoff time, guys like Matt Martin are huge
- kindlyrick

Come playoff time, Matt Martin might be one of those type of players the Isles need to upgrade. I'd rather have a guy like Chris Neal who can bang and score. Don't get me wrong, I like Matt and think he has potential to improve as a player, but at this stage he's one-dimensional and isn't likely to see a big increase in ice time.

Matt's okay, but leading the league in hits isn't a huge stat in my book. A guy could have more hits in a game than anyone else but he may also be taking himself out of the play by following through at the wrong times. In addition, teams that are constantly chasing the play tend to have more hits.

Its sick because Toews has it all.........he's an elite skater with hands. Tavares last year improved his skating big time, but still has work to do.
- kindlyrick

Toews doesn't have the close to the on ice instinct/vision that JT has (IMO). He's also not nearly as strong. He's not the type of guy that can protect the puck in the corner to buy time for his teamates. He's an open ice type player. They're both very different but I think Tavares delves into Toews strengths better than the other way around. Given the choice, I'd take Tavares. In 2-3 years i think it'll be a no-brainer.

And that has to do with what?
- eichiefs9

The discussion today was the isles being bargain hunters, and not extending Matt Martin and trying to get him for the cheapest amount is an example.

The point of the discussion was rewarding Martin last season and extending the league leader in hits on a team with no toughness.

You cant compare a virtual forward playing defense and his contract to that of Martin. Matt Martins a simple player..........here's your job......hit everything in site, and play physical. He does it, and does it well. For a team struggling to find an identity, a player like Martin should have been extended! Its just good business

In 2-3 years you might be right, but thus far, Tavares is still maturing. That being said, his play last year was really eye opening. Hopefully he continues...

i happen to think if he gets more playing time with talented forwards hed put up chris neil points...i always wanted to see him on the top line, just not sure he is fast enough and can keep up with them.

A) A QO is nothing more than a placeholder. It keeps that RFA tag on the player so another team can't swoop in an scoop them for free. It's not a serious offer and usually isn't accepted by any player that isn't some AHL plug that knows he doesn't have a leg to stand on in negotiations. Read: Sean Backman accepting his.

B) You have no idea if they actually tried to extend him or not

Chris Neils been in the league over 10 years. Matt Martin is just starting to hit his stride in the NHL. Give him time. I think he's very similar to Chris Neil. Those type of players are key come playoff time.

We've gone through this already, but thanks for the QO lesson. My point AGAIN, was it shouldnt have come to this. If the islanders are serious about building a good young core.......then act like it. Extend the pieces to your puzzle. Dont pinch pennies....

No but like the isles organization you have a great way of showing it. No Matt we really want you.......this whole QO thing. Its just semantics.

But hey, at least Grabner was extended!

It comes to this with every team across the league with players like Martin. This isn't pinching pennies or the Islanders being incompetent. It's you not understanding how the business of this game works.

disagree. It's more of the result of the players role on the team than the player himself. In other words, there are lots of bangers that would have put up the same numbers if they were put in his spot. His role is just about the most 'replaceable' one on the team.

Again, I like Matt, but I don't see him as a giant irreplaceable piece. He will be signed and it will be a nice extension.

The islanders are not in the same situation as other teams. The isles who struggle to have guys come here, should be locking up anyone who they see in their future. ESPECIALLY if its home grown....

Im well aware of the business side of this game. This was not the point of this discussion.

I spoke to Matt Martin last January in an interview and he made it very clear he wants to remain an Islander for as long as possible.

I would be very surprised if he did not stay with the team.
