Its only a negotiation. Its a starting point. Snow knows he's not going to sign him to that increase, but he has to make that offer for procedural reasons. He has to make that offer to retain Martin's rights. This deal will get done and both sides will be happy with it when its done. Martin is a key cog in this team and nobody on the Isles management staff is stupid enough not to realize that he's part of the core going forward. - Jethro09

Yeah cause guys in the NHL are playing for the love of the game right. Matt Martin lead the NHL in hits on the final year of his entry level deal because he wants to be physical. Please.........figure it out |

hahahah what?
so now your acknowledging that business is business and there are no "friendly discussions". the point of view would lead me to believe that doing the procedural move would be considered a business move....youre running around in circles....
EDIT: should be noted when i said friendly discussions i didnt mean they were giggling and pushing each other into the bushes; i met it isnt being done with any hard feelings. |

what if he didnt want to sign a contract after the season? what if he went on vacation? what if he disconnected his phone?
youre so quick to point the finger at management....maybe MM knew a raise was coming and wanted to get away a little bit. why is it SO OBVIOUS to you that management messed up for this situation? |

Perhaps he was abducted by aliens too. For a team as cheap as the isles......im pretty sure when money is the issue its Wang who is the reason.

The qualifying offer is nothing more than a formality to ensure RFA status. If the Ises don't qualify the offer the player is free to negotiate with the other 29 teams. There's nothing insulting about the process as it simply extends the bargaining period and protects the team from watching the player suddenly get an obscene offer and leaving.
In other words, this is not a serious offer to the player and both parties know it. It is only there to ensure the negotiations will have more time. Martin is very active with the club in the public and the they have a fantastic relationship. He's quite aware that the negotiations haven't even really began. |

I understand exactly what a qualifying offer is. My point, which i still believe is they they should have rewarded the NHL leader in hits with a contract at the end of last season.
Especially when he's homegrown. |

aliens is possible also....
ask jt, moulson, grabner, nielson, KO if they are cheap...shouldnt these contracts give you some sort of indication that the are willing to sign players to the right deal?
you call it low balling....again, the players CLEARLY didnt think so, otherwise they wouldnt have signed!! |

Everyone of the players you mentioned were bargain contracts as far as the isles are concerned. Also, i might be mistaken but were any of the afformentioned players given QO's? Or were they extended during the season? |

Ok well ill try to explain it.. you posted a video about charlie huddy... in response to a conversation about RFA's, Qualifying offers, & the way you feel the islanders do business. Since Charlie Huddy has NOTHING to do with any of the conversation you were responding to... What about him???

And I'm sure both parties are aware they will. However if they're working on the length and amount of said contract as of this date or want to wait until the CBA is done before coming up with a long term deal, the qualifying offer was a must. The amount is irrelevant as the 5% raise is mandated by the NHL bargaining rules. The point is that I guarantee you Martin probably didn't even know the amount of the Qualifier as his agent likely said, here's what's going to happen. It's a footnote for both parties. They did the same thing with Moulson before his deal was signed. |

All of this I understand.........all im saying is, we arent talking about a 3 million dollar or more player. We're talking about a heart and soul guy who you drafted who did his job, and excelled at it. For that alone, its a no brainer........show him its appreciated, and extend him during the season

And we will. Providing more time for an amicable contract to be negotiated is in now way an insult nor does it show a lack of appreciation. The team has very likely told Martin he is valuable to him and they want him around for a long time to come. No player is going to be insulted or feel less wanted because their deal got done in July rather than March. The final terms of the contract will tell that story. |
