Its not about that...........ANYONE is replaceable. This team is about rebuilding, and growing from within. Martin is home grown......he's part of the core.

Homegrown means NOTHING to me if there's an equal or better option available.

Actually, as an independant in this discussion; some times throwing a hit is a bad thing. It can take you out of a play and leave you in a very poor defensive position. Timely hits is the stat that I would like to lead my team in. That and power play time..

just sayin, great to throw the hits, but in his 10-11 minutes a game, seems like that is all he is getting done, with those hits, how bad is his +/-?

- bixll

Preciesely what I said earlier. It's tough to compare one hitters stats to another because one hitter may be backchecking earlier while the other stays to follow through on a hit.

Fair enough, but Garth preaches building from within.....

On a team with No toughness.........Martin is needed.

Hitting is situational. It should be part of the process, not the process.

Sure we can make a case on anything.........its why i dont do stats. But, the fact is Martin is tough. He's a piece to this puzzle.

Wow have we ever gotten mileage out of an offseason contract negotiation for a 3rd/4th line player!

Bottom line for me, I like Martin. I want him here. I'm pretty sure he will be here. I don't think the Isles did any type of disservice by offering a minimum QO and I think Martin knows it was only a formality. It will have no bearing on this or any future negotiations with him. It's a non factor.

He played in Berlin this year. They won the German Elite League Championship. Same owner as the Kings. Another nice ring for a guy that has won a Cup, Calder and now this.

He sends his love to Vokata too..

I know exactly what you're saying, and the only reason my tits are outta my bra, is because this team should be showing appreciation, not preaching it.

Shawn Thorton makes 1.1 per. Martin does not have any better number than he does, so to compare, it would be a good place to start.

Put em' back in. Martin is fully aware that it's only the complete process that matters. I'm pretty sure Drew Brees was feeling unappreciated up until this week....5 years and 100 million has probably made him forget about any problems. For Martin, his agent likely told him it would take all offseason with the CBA coming up. They expected this offer before it even hit the table.

disagree. It's more of the result of the players role on the team than the player himself. In other words, there are lots of bangers that would have put up the same numbers if they were put in his spot. His role is just about the most 'replaceable' one on the team.

Again, I like Matt, but I don't see him as a giant irreplaceable piece. He will be signed and it will be a nice extension.

- keaner17

disagree...i do agree that he is replaceable and far from an untouchable but what he does is FAR from replaceable, regardless of who is taking his spot. the guy plays hard and through injuries, i think there are PLENTY of players that dont and just by the physical presence that he has been given, it isnt as replaceable as you make it sound....

Youre talking about a million dollar player........his contract should have no bearing on the new CBA. This is strictly Snow trying to squeeze him....

Well the isles have finished in the bottom 5 for the last few years with 11 soft forwards.. Are you saying, not having grit is working???

Ya wanna reword that?

I don't question Martin's drive/competitiveness. However, leading the league in hits does not still make him a 'key piece' to the teams future that they "must' retain. There are lots of players in the "A" who can do the same role. It's Martin's potential to be able to do things outside of that role that make him worth keeping. That said, there are lots of guys in the NHL that could fill his role.
