that's what i mean though. weber's basically a UFA right now. he has to decide where he wants to play and then let nashville work out a deal.
by delaying things, he's actually making his own situation worse. - RealityChecker

I guarantee if Weber makes it to free agency the Flames throw the entire team bank account at him.

So will everyone else, and he'll pick the Mighty Oil cause that's where all the free agents are going these days
and no, the Oil didn't want Suter or Parise, so hah |

No one will ever give that much. Though I could kinda see Buffalo being in the running but not for 12 mil a year. I could see something like Sekera, Leopoeld, Weber, 2nd, and a conditional. That's 3 ready D man for one. But anything over 8 or 9 mil a year let em go kill someone else's cap. |

how so?
Please write out the top 6 in EDM right now? I'm pretty sure it's:
Hall - RNH - Eberle
Yaks - Gagner - Smyth
Horcoff and Hemsky are aging vets that shuffled between the second and the third line. Hemsky has also struggled with injury problems. As much value as EDM has placed on him, he's never been traded because no-one will pay what you want for him.
As far as the top 6 I listed above. Smyth WANTED to be traded back to EDM and requested it from LA. will he now accept a trade to Nashville, or will Nashville want someone that just forced himself out of another team? No.
That leaves 5 players in your top 6
Gagner has not proven to be a top 6 talent. In 5 NHL seasons, he has never been able to score more than 49 points even though he has received top 6 minutes and pp time. (although in a package, he'd be more enticing than the previously mentioned players)
that leaves 4 potential players in your top 6. You will now have to trade one of Eberle, Hall, RNH, or Yakupov.
so, lets pick Hall
2 top 6
Hall and Gagner
1 top 4
your D core is terrible
Petry
N. Schultz
Sutton
Smid
Potter
Whitney
none are the type of talent that the Preds would want back to help ease out Weber
2 TOP prospects
pick two of J. Schultz, Klefbom, or Yakupov
AND
Add in 2 first rounders.
That is the asking price mentioned in Ek's post. |

"so you have to look more to the teams who have the funds to pay a D-man close to max money and who have the depth to give the Preds 2 top 6 forwards, 1 top 4 defender, 2 top flight prospects, and at least 2 first round draft picks... and in making the trade you have to be sure Weber will want to sign long-term with you...so basically: Who is nuts enough to do this?"
This is totally bonkers. This is the kind of package that should be put together for freaking Crosby. SEVEN valuable assets for one good defenseman?
If two firsts and a second for Kessel was totally nuts, what is this? |

Well let's face it, at 28 years old, Hemsky should still be in the prime of his career on the way to his peak which would probably be right around 31 or 32. Unfortunately for Ales, he's already hit his peak and never really got to enjoy his prime before it ended. Hemsky is at best a 3rd or 4th liner on a good team although he had promise and great potential early in his career showing flashes of elite talent, injuries and other issues have hampered his development into that elite player Edmonton was hoping to see.
Problem is, they still think he's going to be (or is) an elite level player. |

I was crushed when Kessel was traded. Obviously it worked out fine but man could they have used him in that Flyers series collapse. |

As a Predator season ticket holder I even admit that is offering up too much for Shea.
While I would love to see him stay a Predator, unfortunately I think the return (of a trade) might be in our best interest.
2 top 6 forwards a second line D and two draft picks.
Just curious....heard from enough people when the Suter move to MN. went down that people mentioned "top players don't want to play in Nashville".
Why is that ?
Is it based on endorsements ? Nashville has made the Playoffs the past 5 of 6 seasons.
There is no income tax. You are welcomed and left alone as are the numerous Country Music Stars.
So what gives.......? |

Phaneuf is the only one on the list Nashville would want.

I think he was going to get screwed one way or the other if you're referring to Suter leaving. Even if Suter would have re-signed I don't think Nashville was going to tie up over $200 million in 2 defensmen. I could be wrong, but say they would have been willing to match the Wild's offer and he stays, Weber is more than likely going to be looking for over $100 million for himself. That's a lot of money to have tied up in one D pairing. Especially when you already have one of the best goalies in the league in Rinne. - MnGump
Great points. Wasn't too fond of Suter jumping ship, but hell, Minnesota fans deserve to be contenders after the last few years. I just hate to see Nashville possibly tank. I have a lot of respect for their organization; I don't know many that would suspend two of their top offensive talents for being out too late. |
