if they could move Lee and keep Cole, that'd be ideal for me.
he's been my fav phillie since 07
but losing Hamels wouldnt be the end of the world, imo, either.
if they trade him they can get great value..
and if there's one depth position in this org its starting pitching (big club and minors).
they have like zero quality everyday player prospects.
use Cole's money to sign a quality FA bat or two.

There is no doubt that they don't have the bats, or the prospects to add the bats.

From all the reports I hear, that is the hangup. That the Phils don't want to go 6-7 years on a deal.
- MJL

Do you have a source on that?

I haven't heard Eskin opine on this but I would only buy into the reports if it is a source with similar credentials.

Sorry, I don't have a source. All I hear is the same speculation that everyone else hears.

Might be time for a new gimmick huh?

No gimmick. I just know that the mods here enforce the source of information fairly strictly. It is important to play by the rules.

And after all the suggestions here about the work of Eskin, I have become a fan. He did a great job last night, but I had to stay up late to watch. Well worth it. Good stories on the Phils and PSU.

Eskin made a killer point that the Phils should have signed Hamels before it got to this point. I never thought of it that way, and it felt good to be enlightened.

A little self enlightenment never hurt anyone!

Cheers.

Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com reports that the Phillies plan to offer at least $120 million to keep impending free agent Cole Hamels. This would equal Cliff Lee's five-year, $120 million contract with the club. The Phillies reportedly don't mind giving Hamels the yearly salary he covets, but the number of years is believed to be the major sticking point. With that in mind, two management people on other teams told Heyman that they believe the Phillies will have to go closer to Johan Santana's six-year, $137.5-million deal -- or even more -- to convince Hamels from testing free agency. And they're probably right. While the Phillies plan to make a "substantial offer" to Hamels before the trade deadline, Heyman hears that "some people within the organization" aren't overly optimistic they'll be able to get it done.

5/$135 (25/25/25/25/25 and 25 with a $10 million buyout in 6) should do it, but I believe Hamels wants 6+ years. I think Hamels signs 6/$154 (24x6) with 24 and a $10 buyout in year 7. If not then trade him. Numbers ar getting way too high.

Olt would be the prize if Hamels won't resign. It wold be a long shot, but if I were the Phils I'd go higher on the conrtact after the season if I had a cheap stud 3b like Olt.

Eskin points out that the Phillies should overpay if they want to keep him.

Somewhere to the tune of $25m per year.

It's clear that he is the best young player on your team and there really is no second. Has to get done.
