I disagree completely. Guys like Orr, Gretz and Mario would still be leading the league in points. Especially with the new sticks and equipment and training regiments available to the players today. A lot of the old time players had a (frank)ing second job they worked in the daytimes in the original 6 era, in a non watered down league based on skill.

I agree, said something similar above as well.

nono i agree, thats my point though.

players these days are 100% commited to hockey from like age 5.

training, work outs, food they eat, EVERYTHING is hockey related, everything.

back in the day half the league or more would have summer jobs, because hockey was life but the pay wasnt there, sooo what im saying is..

a guy painting houses all summer and a guy training with gary roberts all summer, eating proper, training hard and on the ice daily...your going to be stronger, faster, and prepared for a long hard season of hockey.

times have changed, everyone who plays the game from line 1-4 (other than wellwood) is conditioned better than the old days. know what im sayin?

anyhow, this is gone on too long now lol

This.

The biggest change is the way these player used to train is so different from today.

Now they have training programs, strick diet, technology that they didn't have back in the day.

- Scabeh

...and watch roberts train, or mma style training a lot of guys use.....it's all back to basics.
the machinery and trickery of the 80's and 90's is bunk.

bobby hull bailed hay and worked like a dog on a farm all summer....came to camp ripped.

That's what I meant by the disconnect though. I think other posts agree with this point, but what they are arguing is from the stance that they have the same opportunities as today's players.

lol ok and what happens when gretzky get crushed 20 times a game? whos going to beat up lucic or chara or another beef baron? nobody.

and if they do - welcome to getting the extra penalty and losing 10-0. and losing your star player due to concussion 10 times a year. lol gretzky was protected, now mario, he wasnt...but i still dont think that speed of his is going to do anything for him in the new hockey world.

- big_dion

Mario wasnt protected? Really? Warren Young, Jay Caulfield, and Marty McSorely beg to (frank)ing differ, i get the feeling you are a young dude who didnt see much of either in their prime, hence your bias, otherwise you would know different.

If the argument was to have Gretzky in his prime, with the training and equipment he had available, over Crosby now, I'd say Crosby. But if they were around in the same era (obviously hypothetical) with the same opportunities, I'd take Gretzky...and I think most agree? and I think this is where we accidently disagreed with each other lol

Edit: Is this a fair assessment?

right but thats what im saying, they dont have the same opp's, whats done is done.

take player A in his prime with his equipment, training, etc

and slot him into a playoff game now, they would be terrible out there.

not all them, but many.

the legends would be decent still but wouldnt stick out like the old days, thats my logic behind this i guess.

who knows i got lost in there somewhere!

Give Gretzky and Orr composite sticks and today's training/equipment.

Give MacInnis, Iafrate, and Lafleur today's miniature catapults we call hockey sticks.

- Leeman4Gilmour

I think if you take the hockey minds of the "legends" and put them with today's training and equipment and while they may not put up the same # of points they used to because of the goalies now, they would still all be at the top of the league in the respective positions.

Sorry to hear about that. Let us know when Crosby gets close to 92 goals and 212 points. Could be a while, maybe you can use two seasons. You realize gretz broke 200 points 4 times right youngin? You know, without composite sticks?
