lol no he wouldnt, we all like to think the greats would still be able to do it, they just cant.

i am not being a know it all here, just being honest.

take bobby in his prime and slot him into a playoff game.

honestly, he may do ok, but he wont shine like he did, not even close.

- big_dion

The thing you are overlooking though is to just plop them in from the 70s to the 2000s they wouldn't do well. But if you take the same player with the development and opportunities players have no, they would do just fine.

Then the Oilers can pick 1st overall for 5 years in a row!
- PrinceLH

Actually, if the NHL does it the same way as last lockout. Oilers would be around 30th.

The Leafs would have the best chance at 1st overall along with Islanders, and Columbus

I do not agree. I truly believe you put those guys, in today's game, and they'd be mega superstars.
- Leafland

everyone has their own 2 cents, but hey im not going to say im wrong or right.

but if you have ever watched hockey from back in the day, its like its slow motion compared to now.

i jsut dont see 140 pound gretzky coming down the wing and having 240 pound lucic run him over and see gretzky get up and score 3 goals after...sorry just not goona happen!

the rockets speed this day would be slower than stalberg.

Youre (frank)ing kidding right? With these new sticks Gretz might have had 300 points forget 200. Mario is well, Mario, and you do not believe that the equipment now would favor him either?
- Prolific_Scorer

Some people forget that Gretz and Mario actually played in the modern era. Both played against guys still playing today.

Why wouldn't he? You say the game has changed, but act like he would still be playing on his tube skates hauling around a piece of tree.

I don't buy it at all. The only position that has upgraded is goalie. Of course it is pretty well impossible to say players from a certain era could play now or blah blah. All I know is, I have the ESPN classic channel, and I love those hockey games.

Give Gretzky and Orr composite sticks and today's training/equipment.

Give MacInnis, Iafrate, and Lafleur today's miniature catapults we call hockey sticks.

Mario actually played a season with Crosby. Weird though, feels like Mario retired like 15 years ago

lol ok and what happens when gretzky get crushed 20 times a game? whos going to beat up lucic or chara or another beef baron? nobody.

and if they do - welcome to getting the extra penalty and losing 10-0. and losing your star player due to concussion 10 times a year. lol gretzky was protected, now mario, he wasnt...but i still dont think that speed of his is going to do anything for him in the new hockey world.

im not overlooking im saying if you put all these pro hall of famers, "the best ones" - in their prime into the new nhl, yes they woudl be great, but they woudlnt stand out like they did in the old days.

there are guys in the NHL in the 70'sand 80's that we can skate faster than. no jokes.

You're right, I should have said upgraded drastically. Everything as upgraded, not just goalie. Its pretty safe to say goalie has changed the most though.

This.

The biggest change is the way these player used to train is so different from today.

Now they have training programs, strick diet, technology that they didn't have back in the day.

If you take those stars and just put them in their prime in today's game, I agree. But if you take those players intangibles and let them develop in the way today's players do, they'd be fine...maybe this is the disconnect wveryone is having?

I disagree completely. Guys like Orr, Gretz and Mario would still be leading the league in points. Especially with the new sticks and equipment and training regiments available to the players today. A lot of the old time players had a (frank)ing second job they worked in the daytimes in the original 6 era, in a non watered down league based on skill.

nono i agree, thats my point though.

players these days are 100% commited to hockey from like age 5.

training, work outs, food they eat, EVERYTHING is hockey related, everything.

back in the day half the league or more would have summer jobs, because hockey was life but the pay wasnt there, sooo what im saying is..

a guy painting houses all summer and a guy training with gary roberts all summer, eating proper, training hard and on the ice daily...your going to be stronger, faster, and prepared for a long hard season of hockey.

times have changed, everyone who plays the game from line 1-4 (other than wellwood) is conditioned better than the old days. know what im sayin?

anyhow, this is gone on too long now lol
