Knowing how poor the leafs finished the two seasons that the Bruins had their first round pick that trade was overpayment, but Burke believed he had a playoff team, so at the time it was fair. Burke just over valued his squad and that is why the trade seems like overpayment. If they were all #15 picks, no one would say it was a terrible trade.
Edit: I bolded the above text, because some don't think even with the high picks that it was overpayment for Kessel, but IMO knowing what you gave up, it is. It is arguable though. Just thought I'd clear that up. - celata29
I agree. It's a distinction that's not made often when people make theoretical trades. Like, Weber for two firsts and whatever else is different if it's with, say, Pittsburgh, than it is with Montreal.
My point is just that I think people overvalue 'brand name' star players to a certain point, so it becomes like Weber or Getzlaf or whoever all of a sudden is worth four or five or six significant trading chips for one guy. In my mind it's only the very, very top players that might get that. I don't see a Weber or Nash being worth a couple of valuable roster players, a couple of firsts, and a couple of prospects. I'd give that up for Malkin, but not for just anybody who's a star. |

Oh I completely agree with you. I was in here earlier and we were talking about the greatest players of all time and I tried to shift the convo toward the weber trade EK offered, and I said it was crazy...let me go find it |

Nope. He's an interesting fellow. It'd be great if he'd prove everybody, including myself, wrong and stand on his ginger head this year. |

It'd be good for them wouldn't? Get a new arena. A nice fresh start. I'm not a geographic probability theorist but it's somewhat still close ain't it? |

Yeah...I mean, he's one of the better defenseman in the league, that's it. I wouldn't trade that package for any defenseman in the league. Hell, I might not even trade that for Crosby. Recall the Lindros trade and which side of that trade won multiple Cups |

Yes, it's still close...It only seats 14,500 for hockey, but it would sell out every game...14,500 is still 14,000 more fans than the Devils get... |

Yeah it'd be crazy. One injury away from trading your team away for a player who is going to remain on the ir for years to come with nothing to show for it |

Don't cry Flyfreaky, the Leafs trading Parent to the Flyers gave the Flyers the Cup. I'm sure aside from the Avalanche, no significant trade the Flyers make will result in a Cup for the other team again, other than last year. |
