Good luck selling those guys. They're already there. Yes, a trade could happen, but it won't. They've already lost Tootoo and Suter and traded Lindback. They'll match for Weber, end of story. They'll have a hard time giving away tickets if they don't.

Theory floated by NHL GM this morning: Predators tell Flyers they'll match the offer sheet and keep Weber if Flyers don't agree to swap players for those four first-round picks the Predators would acquire. Put another way: Preds tell Flyers we'll take the picks, and you get Weber, but only if we get player X, Y and Z for those picks. So, #CBJ fans, don't surprised to see RW Jake Voracek playing for the Predators in the fall. This has been done before with offer sheets signed by Chris Gratton in 1997 and Shayne Corson in 1995. One other reason this makes sense: if Nashville loses Weber, they need players (contracts) just to get to salary floor. -- Aaron Portzline (@Aportzline)

Just like Emeril during one of his shows: BAMM ... He cooks like Kellie looks ... BAMM !!!

This is one case where catching a few shows of American Idol has been good. Two other seasons, to complete the hat trick of course:

Carrie Underwood ... BAMM !!!

...& Katherine McPhee ... BAMM !!!

How 'bout that ?!?

Absolutely on Katherine McPhee - much better than Megan Hilty on a very fun show.

I don't see how that could be a legal part of the process.

But it's the NHL....

Its a 2 part process.

Flyers get weber and in return Nash gets 4 1st rounders. <-- offer sheet

Then

Flyers trade players x, y, z for some of those 1st round picks back.

2 transactions.

If not illegal it seems highly improbable....But still believe illegal in terms of CBA.

Once Nashville passes on Weber there is no leagl responsibilty on the part of Philly to make the next trade.

If the 4 draft picks aren't the exact compensation from Philly tio Nash then the CBA would be circumvented. In this case that is exactly what it would seem like.

Otherwise the proposed trade would have happend instead of an offer sheet.

See Chris Gratton. Its been done before.

I agree with the legal responsibility part of the first sentence..... I think there is an ethical responsibility to follow through on your word, especially in the tight knit group of NHL GMs.

I believe so....the front end $$ is the killer.
- Al

The front end cash is 80 mil over 6 years. C'mon are you kidding me.

the owners are yakking about salary cap rollback and the Flyers ownership pull this signing stunt. This will cap them and if there is a rollback...then what!

Fehr must be enjoying watching this!!!

I don't think the NHL can risk that happening today and if I recall it was a trade after one year....Apples and watermelons.

Also your point about ethical responisbility is the biggest reason the Flyers would not do so.

I'm not sure what you mean here. Right now both parties are far apart from any trades. Poile has 1 week to keep Weber and pay him enormous money or take the picks. Homer on the other hand knows the picks alone are not enough compensation to get Poile to give him Weber (what he really wants)... he will also need to clear cap space. If Poile loses Weber he will need to save face.... soooooo.....

Clocks ticking and finally Poile and Homer come to a conclusion.

Poile gets Coburn, Couturier, and 2 1st rounders for Weber.

Next Poile announces he will not match the offer and weber is a flyer. Then homer announces Philly has just made a trade to Nashville.... Coburn and couturier for 2 of the 1st round picks they just gave Nashville.

Ficticious scenario.... but could happen.

If there's a [cap] rollback, % salary rollback will be commensurate.

Some owners are, the small market ones. The big market ones want to go the other way.

So moving away from Weber for a moment and making a huge assumption that the owner's CBA requests are met ( I know they won't). With the proposed five year maximum term on contracts and no free agency for 10 years just how would that work? What becomes of a player after his five year contract is up? Is he still property of his former team or does he become a free agent?

I think its 10 years without qualifying for UFA. They would stay RFA after 5 years. It'd be like the NBA with their Early Bird Rights.

I think the Flyers have maybe a 20% chance of getting Weber and it will only be done the "correct" way as stated in the CBA.

There won't be any back door deals whcih were obviously pre-arranged.
On a number of level it is almost impossible to happen that waytoday, esepcially not with Snyder.

If I was a betting man, which I am ...I would bet the Flyers have a better chance of acquiring Ryan than snagging Weber.

But there is a chance the Preds can't justify the cost but I think the franchise will lose a lot more $$ this year if they don't keep Weber.

Not sure about the NBA but the NHL also wants to abolish Salary Arbitration. So does that mean the player gets put into a take it or leave it scenario as a RFA? That'll never fly.

I know people on this board and the Blackhawks.com board have talked about booing Stan but I would be very surprised if it actually happened.
- DarthKane

Think it will happen - if there's no significant moves by 5pm tomorrow - and almost any coach, or FO guy will hear it.

I expect SB & McD to hear the most followed by Q.

Lots of angst on these boards and I have to believe there'll be a lot of the same folks there tomorrow, that have been on these boards the last several weeks.

It won't be a boo-fest but it won't be anything close to the warm-and-fuzzy 2 years ago.

I can't wrap my head around the what if's..

The first pitch by the owners was silly..

About 19 teams would be over the cap today and around $190 mill in contracts would have to be dealt with.

I think either the entry level deals will be extended...More likely becasue that won't hurt any player in the NHL today.

As far as the 10 yr no free agency part.....I can't see that happening...Sounds like a return to the 50's-60's.

Max of 5 years is more about owners protecting themselves from each other.

Weber can't be traded now.
Per the CBA - Section 10.3:
"Once an Offer Sheet for a Restricted Free Agent has been received by the Prior Club, the Prior Club may not Trade or otherwise Assign its Right of First Refusal for such Restricted Free Agent."
